We've got a poll similar to this one for the turreted versions of these weapons, so why not post a topic on the cannon versions?
Although I threw a vote for the Laser Turret on the other topic, I have to go with proton cannons here. Good range, great punch.

Definatly proton!
Lasers are only good on a small ship like a scoutship. Other than that, the protons superior range, damage, and accuracy will kick laser @$$ any day.
I have feeling this will be a very one-sided poll...

Protons all the way. My Rebel Cruiser (Sold it because the game was getting too easy) could disable a Kestrel, no sweat, with just its proton turrets and cannons (3 turrets and 5 cannons), one pass, without loosing half its shields. Try that with lasers!

This could easilly end up being a one-sided poll...
Laser Cannons work better against ships with high shields than Proton Cannons do. More shield damage a shot, and a faster reload. They also have a slightly longer range, due to a faster speed. You also save 12 tons comparing 4 Laser cannons to 4 Proton cannons. Buy a Proton cannon if you want, and you've still saved room. Buy a few missles or torpedoes to help take down ships with heavier armour.
Proton Turrets are better than Laser Turrets though, since they have the same reload speed.

Alright. I'll go ahead and put your post down as a vote for the Laser Cannon...

I read somewhere that lasers do 10/2.5 to shields/armour, while protons do 12.5/12.5. However, because lasers have a faster firing rate, in the same amount of time, you do do more damage to shields than a proton cannon. As for range, I personally find that protons have a longer range - vital for the Monty Python, irrelevant for most other things. Since I use the Monty a lot, I'll vote for the proton cannon. On really small ships the laser's lighter weight may be an issue, but I don't fly small ships for long, except the Rapier, which can hold the protons without trouble.
Wow...I never realized just how close the laser and proton cannons were when it comes to damage rate. Before anyone else votes, please read EVaddict's post...

I think I'm probably going to have to say lasers here. I actually like protons better, but the ships I fly that I use cannons on don't have the room for enough protons to stay competitive. I do use protons against the alien, because 5 of them do more than 4 lasers, but I specially outfit my ship when taking the alien.

Laser cannons.
Reason = Damage to shields

<ridiculously long compound sentence> SD, you do realize that Protons actually do more damage to shields, and even though they fire slower, if you have 5 protons and 4 lasers, protons still damage shields more, right? </ridiculously long compound sentence>
Unless SD changes his mind in light of this, we have:
Lasers: 3 Protons: 5
I will have to disagree with Esponer (nothing personal) and say protons. They do massive damage to shields, especially with three or more. And they actually do more damage to shields than lasers.
------------------ Let's see...they're diamonds on wheels. Cool.
Proton Cannon: 6 votes Laser Cannon: 3 votes
The protons have gained another vote, while the laser cannon got two extra...Maybe this isn't going to be as one-sided as I thought.

this is an interesting opinion, and by interesting i mean wrong (nothing personal).
some numbers, from the ev data file:
Proton deals 10 damage vs shields, 10 damage vs armor. Laser deals 10 damage vs shields, 2 damage vs armor.
The formula for damage against shields is ( ShieldDam + ( ArmorDam / 4 ) ). The formula for damage against armor is ( ArmorDam + ( ShieldDam / 4 ) ).
Thusly, Proton Cannons deal 12.5 damage to shields per hit, and 12.5 damage to armor per hit. Lasers deal 10.5 damage to shields per hit, and 4.5 damage to armor per hit.
However, Lasers have a reload of 20, and Proton Cannons have a reload of 30. Thus, the Laser Cannons can fire out 50% more shots per time period than the proton cannons can.
Laser shield damage: 10.5 x 1.5 = 15.75 Laser armor damage: 4.5 x 1.5 = 6.75
Per base time unit, Proton cannons deal 12.50 damage to shields and 12.50 damage to armor. Per base time unit, Laser cannons deal 15.75 damage to shields and 6.75 damage to armor.
so you see lasers actually do much more damage (26% more damage in fact) to shields in the same time period. more damage is not the same as less damage, i am afraid (nothing personal) hee hee!
however, they deal much less damage against armor (only 54% as much damage). this would make them vastly inferior if not for the fact that most ships in ev have way way more shields than they have armor
the laser cannon also has other advantages. both it and proton bolts last for the same time, but it has a slightly higher speed (875 vs 850 for the proton) meaning that it travels a greater total distance (although only about 3%). the laser cannon is also less inaccurate, with a mere 1 percent inaccuracy versus the proton cannons 3 percent inaccuracy, and, of course, is cheaper and takes up a bit less space. however, these are not big issues and you would probably never notice them much in the actual game (clearly the guy who thought proton bolts went further didnt hee hee! ).
one thing that might appear to be a problem with the laser cannon, the fact that you can only get four, is actually not a problem at all. because proton cannons are so much more effective at taking down armor, you should never use only laser cannons (unless you only have one cannon hee hee! ). i would suggest the following:
1 Cannon: Laser 2 Cannons: One Laser, One Proton 3 Cannons: Two Laser, One Proton 4 Cannons: Two Laser, Two Proton 5 Cannons: Three Laser, Two Proton
this is probably the most effective mix of cannons against the widest range of targets. basically, proton cannons alone can be effective against shields or armor, but laser cannons alone take a long time to kill armor, even though they eat through the shields a bit quicker. i think this is why many people do not like the laser cannon. however, if it is mixed with enough proton cannons to take down the relativley small quantity of armor that ships have, it can be very effective, and you can end up doing more total damage in a shorter time than you would have with proton cannons alone. in other words, the laser cannon is better than the proton cannon would be in the same situation, up to a point. then you begin to lose the efficiency that you gained by switching to laser cannons when you need to kill armor. hee hee!
however, because the laser cannon makes a funny sound that i do not like at all and the proton cannon sounds good (and is blue i love blue hee hee ), my vote goes for the proton cannon hee hee hee!!
------------------ -Asmodaethur
Very true, Asmodaethur!
In my early days, I prefered the proton gun, because ot was heavier, more expensive and blue so it had to be better. But some days, I calculated the damage rates of all EV weapons and I realized that the laser gun is actually better. For details, read the posting above.
But I would buy lasers for my first three cannons and then protons. The best combination are laser guns and javelins (once the shield is gone). Two pods (only 10t) and a few hundred javelins are just as good as primary weapons, and you can refill easily by capturing some Corvettes. Few armor-damade is not just a disadvantage, it makes it easier to disable small ships
So, my vote goes for the "Laser Gun".
- Marko
So we're now at 6 for Protons and 5 for Lasers.
Asmodaethur and Marko, despite my laser vote, I must disagree with you guys. If space were no object, I would always fill up on Protons, because 5 of them as much damage to shields as 4 lasers, and way ore to armor. The problem is that they are too heavy to get 5 on ships I use cannons on.
Proton Cannon: 6 votes Laser Cannon: 5 votes
Laser Cannons catching up...
Thanks for your post, Asmodaethur! It helped us all out plenty...

Well, if space were no object, you could buy 4 lasers and fill the remaining slots with protons
