Whats the total number of fighters you can have out?

The total number of fighters you can release depends on how many other ships currently inhabit the system. Since the Escape Velocity engine limits each system to having a maximum number of 36 ships, that is what matters. For example, if there are eight ships other then your own vessel and fighters in a system, you would only (yeah, only ;)) be able to release 27 fighters (not 28, since your own ship counts as a vessel in the system).

Actually, without any plugins, that maximum number of fighters you can launch is six. The most fighters any ship comes carrying is four, and the add-on Hawk bay only supports two more.

...which comes with lots and lots of fighters. Star Destroys and Mon Cals have more fighters than they can even use.

If you are flying a kestrel, there are a few techniques for getting more than 2 lightnings without plugs. They all involve disabling a pirate kestrel and stealing lightnings from it.

For instance, if you also have the tractor beam, you can disable the lightnings, disable the kestrel, then use the tractor beam to drag the disabled lightnings to the kestrel so they dock. Then plunder the kestrel.

Yes, I've noticed. I found out about the maximum amount of fighters when I tried releasing all fifty TIE fighters carried by my Star Destroyer...

Hey, thanks, I didn't even know the tractor part of that. I've stolen Lightnings from disabled Kestrals before, of course,(once I got them off the space derelict in a Scoutship, and it wasn't long before i had a Corvette from the trade value there :)) but didn't know they docked automatically when you tractored a fighter over. This'll be fun to play with.

However, this is only by exploiting bugs in the engine. You're only supposed to be able to have two Lightnings at a time.

I also heard that if you release them, land, buy more, and take off, you can call your original fighters back, thus getting four lightnings. Note: This doesn't work with mantas. And I've never tested this theory anyway.

That makes sense, too, and I don't see why it wouldn't work with Mantas. There's another trick I know of that only works with Mantas: if you use a plug to get 2 Manta Bays, they launch simultaneously. If you launch with only one on board, it still launches, 2, which you can then call back.

This used to work - in fact, I think it worked for all fighters, including Mantas - but was fixed in more recent versions of the engine.

The max number of fighters in a bay is five. The Confed Cruiser can have five patrol ships in its docking bay. For having more fighters you could: release all your fighters out of the bay, and land on a planet and buy any ship. The fighters you released will now be your escorts. Note: you still have to pay them the daily fee.

No, the cruiser only carries four patrol ships. The maximum number of fighters you can launch without plugins or cheating is six. This is achieved by using a Confederate or Rebel cruiser, which gives you four patrol ships or Mantas, and then adding a fighter bay that allows two Hawks.
