The biggest mistake I've made is that I thought that EV was based on Star Wars, since It had the Rebellion. I also:
attacked EVERYTHING in a scout craft couldn't understand why the prates were shootng at me wondered what the Plug In folder was
------------------ We are the knights who say Nee!
I used to think that the Kestrel was a pricey courier for a while, so I upgraded my Clipper to be a heavy fighter so I could disable a Kestrel and plunder the ship's cargo...a mistake. But I learned not to attack a kestrel if you are in a weak ship.
Another mistake: I was saving money to buy a pair of hawks for my heavily upgraded Argosy. When I got the money I didn't have enough space to buy the bay, so I sold a proton turret. I read the description for the fighters and thought that I could easily beat a Confed cruiser when I had Hawks . I found out that hawks are not very good fighters, and that you should always buy an escape pod if playing strict.
------------------ End Of Transmission
My mistakes------
-Didn't know how to jump between systems... -When I first played EV (96 or 97) I couldn't fly the damned shuttle and kept on dying. I couldn't even land a lot! I didn't play EV again for 2 1/2 years -Tried attacking everything in a shuttlecraft -ever time I died I started a new pilot -always had escape pod and auto escape, even in non-strict play. I would buy a ship, die, and end up in the shuttle once again -demanded tribute from Sol, while in a Lightning -Traded in that Lightning for a Denfender, and tried to pirate, and get tribute from Sol in it -was harmless until I got in my Corvette
Have a lot more that I cant think up of at the moment

Yes... those are always good to know :p.

HEY! I liked Space Taxi!
At first.
When I first started I didn't know how to lock on. That made fighting a lot harder.
------------------ They'll try to kill 'em all with the FORKLIFT!
I think my number one idiotic thing was going around levo in my shiny new clipper, disabling, boarding, stealing etc., then noticing i was most wanted in every system in the galaxy. Or when i took my slightly upgraded clipper(i shot up enough feds for the rebels not to kill me on sight) and attacked a fed cruiser(i have proton cannons! you only have....four fighters, cannons, turrets, etc)i actually beat one(no lie!) just let some mantas show up, shoot up its fighters, get killed, then let it chase you at exactly the same speed you are going, then turn(still goin backwards) and shoot it up(takes about 5 minutes :p) Another dumb one was not understanding why my "javelin rockets" werent as good as "heavy rockets" If it kills me two hits, why wont it kill you????

to KK: the alien mission can be done in a corvette(upgraded tho) i did it. You have to make the cruiser follow you, and blast away with proton guns and javs/heavies(i also recommend speed, accel and RCS upgrades, as well as tritanium and shield boosters) if it starts with the fusion beam, just circle around it and keep shooting with tractor beam and proton cannons(escorts should help alot, but i didnt have any). Thats how to do the alien mission in a corvette.(am i the only person never to fly in a kestrel?)
In the read me it sayed you get a forklift in a easter egg. I spent a week looking for one! And even now I still dont get it!

The forklift is a weapon, not a ship:
Hold (Option) and click on the title screen. Hold (Ctrl) + (Command) + (Option) + F when the phrase -MCB 4:35 A.M. appears. The Forklift theme song confirms correct entry. You will have it in the secondary weapons.

You can find out how to get on the EV website. I don't remember where it was though.

Actually, some people do the mission in fighters, not me, though (done the mission once in a kestrel, accidentally deleted my second pilot...).
Well, the when I first started EV I was pretty excited from the beginning. I had a new mac and the intro music for EV rocks. I started a new pilot and read the whole intro text. After reading that I stared at my screen for a few minutes at my shiny new square shuttlecraft. Since the first message that the game gives you is to land on Levo me, being a very ,ehem, nice person i decide to land on Levo. Of course I decided I would first fly around a little. When I finally decided to land a found out that I didn't know any of the keys. after pressing all of the keys I final get the "xxx you our cleared for landing". Out of joy I headed for Levo at full speed, which wasn't very fast in my shuttle... I was expecting my ship to land when i hit levo but it just went past. Being a little annoyed I tried another pass, and another. When it didn't work I pratically smashed my -new- keyboard trying to land. This time it would tell me that I was either going to fast or wasn't close enough. Now being extremely annoyed I tried pressing different keys and suddenly a communications dialog appears. I took a quick look at it only to find that there was no landing option. So what I do is the next plausible option. "Demand Tribute" which didn't work either. So I tried the bribing option which actually worked! Of course I still couldn't get on the planet cause i still didn't know that I was supposed to stop by the planet and push the landing key. So I figure that the 'communications officer' has ripped me off and i decide to atleast destroy something only to find that i didn't have any weapons. So i go to the main screen and go into the preferences. Before i see anything else i find that there is a self-destruct evil-grin I go back into the game and i start searching for a target. I see a large ship that says confed. It looked like an important ship to this planet so i decide that thats what I'm gonna destroy. I get as close to it as possible and I start the self-destruct. 5...4...3...2...1...self-destruct sequence cancelled. At this point I'm ready to trash EV when suddenly I get the idea of holding down the keys for the self-destruct. In the end I did get my ship to explode right on top of the confed ship. but of course i wasn't able to do any damage to it

J.ACE21, what makes me laugh about your post -- indeed, about many of the posts in this thread -- is I can so easily see myself in the same circumstance. Good one.
sirterrapin, thanks for the 'Vette/alien suggestions. My new pilot is pretty close to getting the Tractor Beam. (I made a big mistake by purchasing a Rapier between the Scoutship and the 'Vette. That was a waste of time....)

There is an asteroid easter egg!! If you have extreme luck and patience one of the large asteroids in the Levo system will make a boom sound when you shoot it. This is a funny topic. Thank God for reading the documentation. Although I did do the asteroid for all of 30 seconds till I hit one.

Well abviosly its a weapon, it sayes in the read me .but I didnt know were it was.
Hey All,
OK, this wasn't me, honest.
I found this little game called "Escape Velocity" on the Macaddict issue 1 CD (summer '96). Played it, loved it, registered it, lent the CD to my neighbour.
About a week later, I asked him what he thought of the game. He complained that he had trouble making money in the game. I offered to help him with his game. After about 2 minutes of him playing, I came to the conclusion that he was losing money at an alarming rate because he was buying commodities "high" and selling them "low".

man, my first newbie mistake was a long time ago. i started out alright, i read the entire intro thingy, and was excited. as soon as i got to levo, i left and was in space, magically. thats when it happened. i couldn't move. i thoought it was the mouse, then a combination of a control key and the mouse button. i'm sitting there for a few minutes, then just began hitting keys on the keyboard. thats when i was finally able to do things. i was so happy.
just so you know, i like shooting at asteroids and i have gone to the barrier in hopes of skipping hyperspace. that was fun.
