After conducting several tests over the past weeks, using a standard Rebel Destroyer against a Confederation Frigate, the results were quite interesting. Using ResEdit, I was able to program the Sol system to have a single Confederation Frigate every time the player entered the system. I was using a standard-armed Rebel Destroyer, equpt with missiles and torpedoes, as well as a few heavy rockets. I played just like the AI does, making passes and receiving all the guided and turret weapons the Frigate fired. Now, I took on a Confederation Frigate twenty times. My Rebel Destroyer managed to come through the battles 65% of those times, which really tells me something: Does the Rebel Destroyer truely hold an edge with it's firepower and advantage in agility?
Post your comments and suggestions. The normal Rebel Destroyer has 200 shields, while the Confederation Frigate has 250 shields. But, the Rebel Destroyer has a shield recharge rate well over twice as fast as the frigate, and can almost fly circles around the thing. After finishing those tests, I'm now content to say that the Rebel Destroyer is a far better ship then the Frigate.

I shall perform my own AI v. AI tests at the PlanetPhil Proving Grounds this weekend. But I'm sure your opinion will be substantiated: the Rebel Destroyer is a much better ship than the Confederation Frigate, and (adds bitterly) is the only reason the Rebels have a prayer.

Actually, although my instincts tell me the Destroyer is the better, I've noticed a 50-50 chance in a one on one battle. It's quite interesting trying to steal both of the disabled ships, actually.
In fact, I've never seen the Manta - Patrol Ship, Destroyer - Frigate, or either of the two cruisers seem to come out one sided. Same with EVO Azdgari and Igadzra Arada. 90% of the time they disable each other.

I have almost always seen that the Destroyer destroys the Frigate. And the Patrolship destroys almost always the Manta, as it's enough with one Heavy Rocket to destroy a Manta. (On the other side, is the Manta capable to take out a Patrolship only with its missiles?)

Sounds good. And I can promise I gave no advantages to the Rebel Destroyer: I simply kept switching between my missiles and Heavy Rockets, and using the torpedoes right when I spotted him (the Confederation Frigate).
Usually in Escape Velocity, I love to watch a Rebel Destroyer and Confederation Frigate fight. The outcome is always very interesting...
I remember watching a Rebel Cruiser and Confed Cruiser fight:
<CC is Confed Cruiser, RC Rebel Cruiser, PS Patrol ship, M manta>
Both launched fighters, Ms swarmed the CC quickly, but then were pushed aside by the patrol ships.
CC torpedoed the RC, and suffered surprising damage from the RC's missiles.
They met in combat, and the RC's shields dropped a lot. By then both fighter complements had destroyed each other, the remaining PSs getting killed by the RC.
The RC passed the CC again, taking heavy fire but dishing out a lot with it's heavy rockets.
The RC passed again, and both disabled each other instantly.
I came by and boarded both ships <hehehe> but couldn't take either with my Shuttlecraft.....
You saw two cruisers of the Confederation and Rebellion get disabled? Wow...Maybe the Confed Cruiser isn't as tough as it thought.
It was a great fight, and the Confed Cruiser was really dishing out damage.
Only the Rebel Cruiser's shield recharge saved it.
Yeah, almost anything can save you in a dogfight. Once in my Rebel Cruiser, I had a fight with a Confed Cruiser (still tough to kill for me) while my shields were near 80% to begin with. After dodging his torps, we engaged. By the time my shields were at 15%, his were at 25%, so I launched all 4 of my Mantas. After being destroyed, we started shooting again. By the time he was disabled and destroyed, I was down to armor. When I checked how much...30%! If it weren't for those Mantas, we'd both had been destroyed!

Both are great ships. It just depends on (A) Who shoots the first torpedo and ( Which ship is controled by the character.
------------------
Having balance ships in a plug in is a very good thing, and it is also good to have both ships sometimes win and sometimes lose. Winning should depend on if A) the ship is better in astroids and interferance and how close they are to each other. The destroyer and frigate is a good fight because the outcome for the battle could be different if there is a manta or patrolship around. Maybe that is why it is interesting to watch the two ships fight each other. Note: a better way to test is to set ship A to 50% and ship B to 50% in the system. Make it so that they both like you and that there is a max of two ships.

Yeap, exactly what I did...I messed around with the Sol system, entered the Rebel Destroyer and Confederation Frigate ID numbers, and watched them poud each other for ten fights, before I decided to take on a Confed Frigate in my own Rebel Destroyer for ten fights. The Rebel Destroyer won thirteen of the total engagements...
13 out of 20? that's only ummmm... carry the 3... 65% of them! I thought the Destroyer was better than that! Poor 7 Destroyers. :frown:

Is this even a contest? If both ships were controlled by humans, the outcome is definite. The destroyer would win. Too bad no multiplayer EV, huh?

Not exactly a contest, but an interesting experiment. Though I was expecting the Rebel Destroyer to win atleast 50% of the engagements, I was surprised that the outcome was actually 65%...

the manta is a little better than the patrolship. they have the same armor/shield, and the patrolship only has 1 more cannon than the manta, but the manta has swivel cannons. it really depends on the gov't you work for, 'cos they make it so your gov't has some edge. but normally the rebels win, unless they are too outnumbered
