How the %$#$%! do you control escorts?

Didn't mean to be rude, but I recently captured a courier and it didnt do squat for me in the heat of battle. How do you tell it to attack? I'd also love any suggestions about inexpensive alternatives. 🙂

You can give your escort various commands by doing option xcv.I think you can make your escort fight by option F.

Also, maybe your escort was too slow to reach you in the time of the battle.I believe that escorts should automaticly attack when you battle with another ship

Sorry, only internally launched fighters can be ordered to attack targets. Most hired and capture escorts will attack an aggressor (but not all the time). To see the key commands for the other escort commands check out the preferences menu. (i changed mine form the default and don't remember what they were)

All your base are belong to us.

Only escorts designed for combat fight.

The Courier is a trade type ship, so it doesn't fight, but supplies cargo space.

It really depends on the way your keyboard is set up. Personally, to control my escorts I use option-tab.

Below is the information direct from the EV documentation. (Everyone should try reading therough the documents, it can save a lot of grief.) Note that cargo ships such as your courier do to usually fight except when attacked, if you want help in combat you need warship escorts.

To control the ships in your fleet, use the following key commands:

Key: Effect on escorts: Effect on fighters:
C Recalls your escorts to the Recalls your fighters to the formation
formation for a short period of time until you give them further orders

Option-C No effect Orders your fighters to dock with
your ship

V Orders your escorts to hold position Orders your fighters to hold position

F No effect Orders your fighters to attack your
current target

I have found Esponer to be right. Your fighting escorts (Kestral, defender) will attack your enemies while you trade vessels (Courier, Clipper) will not. Bulk Freighters and light freighters and even argosies will jump into battle as well. Protect them well or tell them to stand down or else they will become dust. I watched a defender take down a light freighter all by itself (damn escort picked a fight) so I had to waste the defender (it cost me about 10k credits). To keep your allies' fighter fesh (Kestral, Escort Carrier, Rebel/Confed Cruiser) tell escorts to stand down and then tell them to return to formation. They will recall fighters after they are reactivated and tehn relaunch them. Quite a nice little factoid there.

For those of you who have had a look at the EV bible, EV Edit, etc., Only ships with the warship,' or brave trader' AI will automatically attack, and only the `warship' AI goes after enemies automaticall(when in formation).
