Okay, just downloaded the game, and I'm trying to do the tutorial.
So the Tutorial Daemon is up, and it tells me to click the "Next" button to proceed. I click, and nothing happens. Nothing at all.
What's up with that?

Can you give us a little more info, please? Where exactly are you in the tutorial?

Right at the beginning. I'm supposed to try to crack the "Uplink Test Machine". So I log onto my Gateway and connect to the Test Machine successfully. I'm presented with another login dialog, which I assume I'm supposed to crack, since it doesn't accept my login/pass.
Running "Tutorial 1.0", I'm presented with a small window labeled "Tutorial Daemon". It has text telling me "Click the Next button to continue to the next stage". Or something like that. Is there a way to run the game in a window so I can actually see what I'm talking about?
So anyway, I assume this Tutorial Daemon is supposed to walk me through the tutorial. But clicking the "Next" button does nothing. At all. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Well, okay, the button lights up to indicate I've clicked, but nothing else happens. I'm not taken to the next stage.
That was happening to me for some reason, but after I had played already.
I don't remember exactly what I did to fix it, but some things I did around the time it occured and the time it fixed: Quit Uplink Enable Software Mouse Disable Software Mouse Deleted my character Created a new character Ran Uplink in a window instead of full screen.
Try some of those things. If it doesn't just magically fix itself, try restarting/trashing uplink prefs/reinstalling uplink. I'd think one of those should work.
Usually, you have to do whatever it says in the tutorial window before you can click next. From your description, you should be at a login screen that has both a user name field and a password field. Try running password cracker on the box. If this isn't the place where you are in the tutorial, please explain more thouroughly (what have you done already, etc.).

What is "Software Mouse"? Are you using a Mac? I'm running Mac OS X 10.2.6

Yeah, I'm right there. But the only "programs" I seem to have are File Copy v.1.0, File Delete v.1.0 and Tutorial v.1.0. I was taking a guess that the first step of the tutorial might be to acquire a cracker program, but like I said I can't get to that first step.
I belive it's called software mouse. When you start up the game, click options, then graphics I think. There's some option about the mouse.
I have no idea if that really affects it, I just remember it's one of the things I did.
And if the Next button is there, but you can't click it, that doesn't mean you have to complete a step. The Next button won't show up until you can advance the tutorial. It is indeed because of a bug, and not because you haven't completed a task, simply because it hasn't given you one.

Doing the demo (which I downloaded from Introversion), I had to change the mouse option too. I didn't have to fiddle with it in the registered version.
