Any Bugs, Post Em here.

Does anybody else find that F12 means instant kill death death quit the program now ah-oooh-gah dive dive emergency scram?

Sorry. Let me translate from Jeff to English and try that again.

When I hit the F12 key, at any point including the opening splash screen, the program quits immediately in a way so sudden that at first I thought it was just hiding until I checked the output of ps and saw, yes, that it was gone.

This wouldn't be a big deal so much except, you know, F12 is right by the "delete" key on my keyboard. And "delete" is a key you use quite a bit in this-here game. Which means if you'd been in my house earlier tonight, you would have heard:

(incessant Uplink soundtrack)
clicky-clicky
"My voice is my passport."
clicky-clicky
bleep
click
(sudden stop to incessant soundtrack)
(three seconds of silence)
"Damn! Damn, damn, damn!"

Just in case, you know, none of you folks what read this here board have ever experienced a program crash at a crucial moment before. So, you know, you can know what it's like. 😉

it just my copy, or does the 'very fast' mode move as fast as the 'fast' mode? It was going faster a little bit ago, now both are exactly the same speed.

blarg then, meh. It was once I hit intermediate, suddenly the game slowed down. Now, not only do missions only come once every 12 hours, time has slowed down, making this game crawl by annoyingly slow.

Another bug I found: When I'm typing on IRC, it's both extremely unresponsive to my typing, and it will cut off the first letter in my message about 25% of the time, which is very annoying.

yep, happens in the Windows one too... the guy that made uplink, and the IRC client had never had any experience with IRC before this... go figure 😉

Have you made sure that the mouse cursor is over the text field? It has to be. (The exception to this is that you can hold the mouse over one text field, and tab your way to another.)

I only figured this out because I have experience with some *nix/X11 apps that work this way in the real world... Quite annoying for me as a mac user, being used to carets and all.

Hmm, seems like a few too many bugs for now, especially for a 1.3.1 version... awesome game though. I think once a few things have been worked out, like the music issue, and the typing issue, then I might pay the registration fee.

Also, is there any chance that some convenience features can be added? Here's a little bit of a list:

1. Arrow keys should work.
2. There should be keyboard shortcuts (for example, command-A to select all, or command-C to automatically open File Copier and copy the selected file, or the Delete key to automatically open File Deleter and delete the selected file)
3. A save function would be nice, although with a game like this it also might make it too easy. Maybe restrict its use somehow. Until then I just have to back up my user file every now and again.
4. Allow a few shortcuts for bouncing... for example, have a "randomly bounce through every public server" button that lets you insert a random series of bounces through all of the public servers. This could be after InterNIC or UTS, and before your destination.
5. Have a way to highlight important locations on the map
6. Make the map less cluttered by abbreviating the labels. For example, instead of saying "e-Trade Solutions Public Access Server" it could say "e-Trade" and have a color-coded dot. Perhaps a blue dot for a public server, a green one for an internal machine, and orange for banks or something.
7. Allow you to change the text size. Right now I have to set my iBook's LCD to 800x600 to read everything, but that makes it fuzzy. At 1024x768, everything is sharp but it's way too small. If the text size could be made bigger, I could have the extra screen area and sharpness provided by 1024x768 but I'd still be able to read.
8. Have more help in the tutorial. As it was, I was completely lost when I was done with it and I had to come here for help. Perhaps at least point you to InterNIC as a good starting point to find lots of public servers to bounce between. The help topics in the Uplink Internal Services are good, but perhaps they could be expanded upon just a bit for those who have never played before.
9. Minor speed/performance improvements would be much appreciated.
10. Maybe make it a tad easier to copy, move or delete multiple files at once. Deleting is easy provided you know how to work the console, but the others are tedious tasks that would be much quicker with some sort of drag-selection thing.
11. Allow prioritizing of various tasks for the CPU to handle. Being able to change it is great... but it would be nice if I didn't have to up the Password Cracker way above the Trace Tracker every single time I use it. I'd like to be able to set very low, low, medium, high, and very high priorities to certain programs, so whenever I open them, they automatically use as much CPU as I want them to and I don't have to adjust them.
12. Allow saving of multiple routes in persistent memory. Right now, you can save one route until you quit the game. When I re-launch the game later, I have to reset my route, which takes forever because of the inefficient display on the map view. And if I make a mistake, there's no way to go back so I have to start over from the beginning again.

Anyway, I don't know if this is the exact right place to put this, but it seems somewhat okay. Also, I don't know how much control the Ambrosia guys really have over this. I mean, it would be great if they could just take the port and streamline it into a really kickass game, but if that's not possible I'd like to know so I don't get my hopes up. And it may not be technically possible to do some of the suggestions I listed. I mean, if separating the music from the sound effects are so hard, imagine what it would be like getting that other stuff to work!

Something that has been bugging me in some missions is how the file deleter works: instead of working like the file copier or the log deleter, which moves on top of the actual file slot where it is dropped, this program moves to the slot below the slot you drop it on.

Also, as opposed to the log deleter, the file deleter can't be reused, which makes deleting several files a pain, because you have to click on the program menu icon, wait for the program menu to open, hold the mouse over the first menu item, wait for the next menu to open, and then grab a new copy of the file deleter - this usually takes more time than it takes the last file deleter to do its work.

An easy way to delete a bunch of files (say, if you want to completely clear out a server of research) is to go to Admin and then Console. You'll get to a text entry box. Enter "cd usr" and you'll be put in the data folder. Type "delete all" or just "delete" and it'll delete everything. You can also use that to delete log files - type "cd log" and you'll be put in the log folder, and you can repeat the process. You can even completely delete the computer's OS by going into "cd sys" and deleting everything. However, I've never been able to delete the OS before the trace almost reached me. It takes a long time. Typing "exit" leaves the command prompt.

The log deleter v 4.0 is much better than using the command prompt. It also makes it possible to delete entries selectively. This is a bug reporting thread, though, so let's keep on topic:

I've noticed that if I try to type in the InterNIC admin password while having a log deleter dragged around using the mouse, Uplink crashes.

While I agree with many of the features that you are requesting here, we will not be adding any features to the Mac version. This is a straight port, which means features and such are the same as they are in the windows version. This also means that bugs in the windows version are also in the Mac version, though.

If you want to request features, I suggest you go to Introversion's boards and post the request there.

another bug (also display-related):

i use a 23" monitor. i changed the game resolution to 1600x1200 (stupid, i know), now the whole screen looks destroyed, ie. usually half of a "content block" is invisible.
(url="http://"http://www.thermonuclear.biz/uplink/pic1.pdf")http://www.thermonuc...uplink/pic1.pdf(/url) (url="http://"http://www.thermonuclear.biz/uplink/pic2.pdf")http://www.thermonuc...uplink/pic2.pdf(/url)

bad thing is, i can't log in nor change game settings (to switch the resolution back), because i cant see the buttons. when i trash the options file, my game account is gone. couldnt find out where in options or the .usr file the resolution could be changed.

update: i managed to change the settings while being "blind" to 1024x768, now everything is even worse; basically black screens. any help would be appreciated.

sorry, i forgot -

dual 1ghz, 1.5gb ram, geforce4ti, 10.2.6, blah blah.

This last one may not be a bug, I haven't had the chance to repeat it yet. I got sloppy on a bank hack (got greedy and tried to steal from two accounts on one hack) and they ended up getting to me. My motion detectors alerted me, and I blew the gateway. No problem so far. Come back, get the e-mail telling me the Feds got nothing and I was lucky, and I spend 500,000 credits to replace my system. Next hack I do, motion detectors go off again, I blow it again, and the cycle repeats. I repeated this 6 times, doing different, easy hacks, yet after every one, they came back and set off the motion detectors, until I had no more money, and they came back and busted me anyway. I was doing hacks that shouldn't have even been detected, like changing the academic database while using a monitor bypass (and yes, I was very quick about deleting the logs, you don't earn over 4 million credits if you don't know how to do it). I'll try to repeat this and see if it happens again, but it just seemed that once I blew up the first server, they were bound and determined to track me no matter how simple the next hack.

(/B)

Bucaneer, I've had a similar problem. (I posted it as a topic "immediate trace" problem) Although, my record was clean when it happened to me and I am not nearly as advanced as you. Did you figure out the problem at all? Anyone? Thanks.

I figured out part of the "dancing names on the world map" bug:

If you have a saved connection, and then you hide one of the servers that is part of that connection, when you next click "load" the server names will start dancing.

------------------

When you use a bypass, it doesn't hide when you change to a different view... very annoying when i'm trying to hack a LAN.

I have a registered copy of the game and I have out in a lot of play even though the plot just started.
So I finally got the email from the dead guy and I was all ready to test out his password, but now I don't have the link anymore to the ARC mainframe. I could swear that it showed up for a second and it is still mentioned in the email, but I can't get it on my list. Help!!

Connect to InterNIC, and search for ARC. Their mainframe should be in there somewhere.
