Coldstone Crashing

Hello, I just added new RAM and now COldstone doesn't let me generate map pictures anymore. It says Error creating buffer. Try increasing the momory for this application, then I click ok and it says Coldstone has unexpectedly quit. I am using OS X, with a Dual 1.25GHZ G4 processors and 1024MB of RAM.

hmm, sounds like a brag to me :p.

I'm just kiddin'. But this happens to me too on my 600 MHZ iMac as well. I just can't create the location pictures for the maps. But this only happens in OSX. It works fine in OS 9.2.1. I switch to OS9 to create the map pictures.

"Stiney! Get me a danish!"

Strange, it works fine for me, and I have a 400 mhz imac with 512 mb RAM 😛 and yes, I am using os X!

Cant exactly help you out, sorry...

Now that is interesting.... Go to File and choose 'Get Info' on the Coldstone app. Make sure that the button 'open this in the Classic Environment' is not checked. OS X shouldn't even mention the memory usage of Coldstone to you, not unless you go looking for it. Might be a case of CS misbehaving.

If this doesn't work, try deleting the Coldstone .plist in your /user/library/preferences folder, or possibly just deleting and reinstalling Coldstone completely from CD to 1.0.1.

Interesting error. I've never had an app crash after installing more memory before. Did you check that the manufacturor's warranty says 'Compatible with Coldstone in OSX ' on it? 😉 Seriously now... weird. Let me know... and incidentally, what OSX version are you running?

Hmm. Okay... even weirder. Here's a quick thought, try removing the new RAM, booting back up again and seeing if Coldstone still works. When you installed the RAM, did you update the system at all, or change your config? I'm still running 10.2.6, so I'm unfamiliar with 10.2.8, but I remember it having some Ethernet problems on G4 models.... is it the final update you downloaded, or the version that came out and was pulled?

OK, just a few questions (this is really, and I mean really stumping me)

Does Coldstone still work fine in Classic (if you still have classic installed)?
Did you try the erase, reinstall, lather & run?

If it does still work in Classic, does it still manage to create map pictures for you in Classic? Or does this cause a buffer overflow as well?

Does it show you on the apple system profiler that is has that much RAM, and did you install the right amount of RAM in the correct amount of groups? Check out your specs here: (url="http://"http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.html")http://www.info.appl.../applespec.html(/url)
Also, I know it is a stupid question, but is the RAM mounted all the way in, as in pushed all the way into the slots? Any of this may be the problem. Good Luck, this has me puzzled as well.

Yes, my system profiler says that I have 4 256MB RAM chips installed which is correct. Yes, the RAM is mounted all the way in.

This is a known bug in the OS X version of Coldstone Game engine. They told me that I have to go to the OS 9 - to get it to generate maps. If you are running OS9 while in OS X, then that's why you have the error. Go to just OS 9 all by itself, and it will work for you. By the way, "Good job!" on installing the memory! You put it in just perfect!

GrahamVH falls over backwords. My computer doesn't let me start in OS9. It doesn't even show up as a startup disk. I figured it was because I have 2 processors.

Call Apple about that. It should start up, no matter what other system(s) you have installed. If it will run on OS X, then it should be running alone! (NOTE: I did say should) Make sure before you do any other modifys to your hardware, okay?
{EDIT - afterthought.} You are using the system prefs panel in the dock, right? The one that says OS 9(Classic)?

Actually... I wouldn't guarantee that. I recall Apple announcing last year that any new machines shipped this year would be unable to boot into OS9, period. They later revoked this for the eMac range, because a lot of school users still haven't switched to OSX in terms of software & training, but I don't think they changed their mind for their Pro machines....

Graham, I'd recommend dropping an email to David Dunham (help@ambrosiasw.com) or posting a topic in Just Chat... I really can't think of anything except a bug in the engine, but maybe David has some better ideas.

Sorry I can't do any more. :frown:
