Coldstone Cost

These days nothing seems to be free any more...
Does anybody know what coldstone will be costing today's modern consumer?
Will we be able to sell our work?
What sort of liscenseing will be involved if we can sell our work?

  1. Nope, nobody but Ambrosia and Beenox, I predict it'll be around $50, but don't hold me to that, it's just a guess.
  2. Yeah, you might be able to publish it through Ambrosia, but only if it's quality. πŸ˜› Otherwise, you can publish it however you want/can.
  3. I believe the only restraint on the engine that andrew has released, is that you must have a 'Made with Coldstone' logo somewhere on the product. There may be more, but this is the only one we know about.

Luckily I read the entire post before letting this phrase sink in. Bad, bad Celchu! Almost gave me apoplexy!

But of course. Far more quality than anybody elses, the best game ever, blah, blah, blah. πŸ˜‰

Maybe also, in one of the music tracks, if it is played backwards you can hear a demonic choir chanting "made with coldstone, made with coldstone, all hail moki, made with coldstone....' ad infinitum. πŸ™‚

Well, a little at first.

Anyway, now to address the actual questions.

Taken from the Coldstone FAQ:
Once I make a really cool game with Coldstone, what then?

You can either distribute it for freely, or you can publish it through Ambrosia (subject to Ambrosia's acceptance of the game, of course). Ambrosia Software, Inc. is planning to publish an entire series of Coldstone-based games (similar to AD&D; modules) created by various talented people who use the Coldstone engine. We'll take care of the publicity, operations, order taking, etc., you just work on making a great game!

The engine will also be licensable for commercial/shareware distribution, should wish to "go solo" and publish your game on your own.

Ok, to me this implies that everyone pays an up front fee for their copy of Coldstone, probably around $45-$50 as Necro already stated. This license allows them to both release games for free, and seek to publish them through Ambrosia. However, if you wish to release a game 'solo' through either a shareware or commercial process, you will probably have to pay another fee, say $30 for shareware and $50 for commercial. Keep in mind though that I'm only guessing, and am in no way affiliated with Ambrosia or Beenox, other than a quite healthy consumer relationship. πŸ™‚

"Any good that I may do here, let me do now, for I may not pass this way again"

This is what I think will happen, although I may be completely wrong. πŸ™‚

I think there will be an upfront fee of anywhere from 35 to 50 bucks. If you release a game for free, you will only have to worry about that upfront fee. If you release a game as shareware/commercial, there will another fee. I don't know whether it would go so in-depth as to be a certain percentage per copy sold, or simply a flat fee.

I'm afraid that's true, but you can't ask anyone who has spent more than a year on a project to give it away for free.

Of course you can sell you're work! (You'd better be able to) And you can sell you're work any way you want to. Be it shareware or commercial-ware, (is that a word?) or you could give it away as freeware if you want. (You'd better be able to)

I have a fairly solid idea, but it's based on my being on the beta team, and I'd hate to potentially mislead you by 'guessing.' Let's just say that if you're going to be creating your own artwork, paying for Coldstone is going to to be cheap in comparison to your graphics software.

Uhh, seems to me that if Coldstone is allowing me to release a game that I otherwise would not have been able to release, then giving up a portion of the income will still leave me ahead of where I would have been.

No Coldstone=no game=$0 revenue in shareware fees

Yes Coldstone=Yes game=$x amount of revenue-Coldstone royalty=Still more than $0

Don't like it? Write your own game engine and quitcherbellyachin.

I paid $1200 for macromedia director and I still think it's worth every penny.

I'd say quitcherbellyachin is quite accurate...

now don't hold me on this... but I heard someone say that Coldstone would be relativly cheap ($30-40) then, to export a final game, you would have to pay for a code, or something of that sort.
