Tiered maps?

Quick question on the movement layer: Will it be possible to create multi-tiered maps or leveled movent layers? For example, having a bridge, and you can walk under it or go up the hill and walk over it, all in the same map?

Since it's completely spritr-based, I kinda doubt it. :frown:

I certainly hope so.... that's something that sprite-based games have been doing for a decade and more. if we have only one level of movement tiles per map... I'm wondering because I can't think of a single instance in PoG where that situation comes up. that might be because it's never needed (it's really not...), or it might be because it can't be done.

hmm. well, I'll reiterate: I certainly hope it's possible.

I think it is possible. A little while ago, I remember having seen a picture from PoG with a chandelier(sp?) hanging over the bottom of a room screen, and the character was standing partially below it. At the very least, you could be able to go under it, and set up something that makes it look like you go over it, but you really don't.
But chances are that it is going to be possible, though you may only be able to have a few tiers per map.

So are we allowed to re order the layers say there are 6 layers and i put the character layer on the 3 so he would interact with "1 and 2" but "4-6" would be out of his grasp, right???

he's talking about having a second layer that you can move your character around on top of. the bridge analogy was a good one. that area of PoG isn't the same phenomenon.

I believe what Saphire is talking about is formally known as "Parallax Scrolling". Since apparently so much has changed since the last beta, even the testers don't know anymore (but even if we did, we couldn't tell you).

He is not talking about parallax scrolling. Imagine, say, that there is a castle. Let's say that your character can walk up to the parapet and along the castle walls. What saphire is asking is, can you do that and ALSO have your character walk through the portcullis which is directly under a section of the parapet? to do this, you would have to have your character be able to move BETWEEN layers. I seriously doubt that anyone will answer your question, though, saphire. They haven't in the past... I think we're all just gonna have to wait till CGE comes out.

Coldstone is two-dimensional. Because there are 'layers' of graphics and the PC/NPC's occupy a layer that can be 'sandwiched' on the display there is an illusion of 3D. What is necessary for your example is true 3D. Not possible with Coldstone.

"True 3d" is not really necessary - FF6 and Chrono Trigger, among others, did exactly what saphfire is asking for. All that is really needed is the ability to have two separate movement layers, with the ability for the game engine to move sprites from one to the other.

Or simply to change the layer position of the PC/NPC layer in the layer stack. 2.x dimensional games.

But this does require a 'triggering' of the relayering with some 'event trigger'. I know that there are some games that use 2.x dimensional techniques to achieve a 3D effect.Which is very noticable in the awkwardness of implementation. What I stated was simply that walking over and under a bridge is 3D. Period. The character must move in the 3rd dimension and not unrealistically leap to different 2 dimensional planes.

Coldstone is not a game generator with these capabilities. And you know this.
