I can see it, but where is the switch/are the switches I need to flip to get at it..??? I've discovered the lava-proof ship and the shields but the green gun still eludes me.

Well, first you need to blue gun. You can find that in the volcano. The blue gun will get you access to other areas, wherein can be found the green gun.
