Darwinia was created by Introversion Software (the site you link to). Introversion sell the Windows and Linux versions, which they created entirely in-house. The Mac version was ported to the Mac through a combination of efforts from Introversion and Ambrosia. Ambrosia sells the Mac version, and inflates the price by a nominal amount in order to cover their costs (marketing, porting, support, &c.).
