A political outline of the wars
The Shard Wars, a political outline of the two century Armageddon 2700-2900 NC Dr. Joseph Pentecost, professor of political history at the University of Kane
Introduction: Welcome today. I am Dr. Pentecost, the descendant of the President of the Ancient union called the Federation. Two hundred and fifty years ago, we were lead into a war that shaped to be the Armaggedon for all of us. However, before explaining the beginning, I must explain the history about the end and what happened after the first "period of disunity", for it directly affects the war. A little over a millenia and a half ago, there were three nations duking it out, two of which had corrupt governments, the third of which was isolationist, and had no wish to open contact with any of the others. The famous legend, Ory-hara, united them all in a final war, after the ancient, first Vell-osians had been released from their slavery into the viel beyond. After the end of the war, he dissapeared strangely. Now, as many of you are aware, the Polaris surrendered to the Federation and Auroran governments, after destroying their ability to make war. It was a brilliant campaign, the likes of which would never be seen again. After this war, the the Federation and Auroran governments combined. We were lead into a new age of unity. After the three governments were combined, there was a large group of ex-Polarans who had no place in society. At the social positioning of the casteless caste, they were used as diplomats, spys, jurors, servants, anything really. They were telepaths, but in this new form of government, there was no place for them. They grew farther and farther apart from the others, till they finally left, and repopulated the planets once owned by the Vell-os. They dedicated themselves to the replication of the Vell-osian arts, improving over time. That's the way it had been ever since.
The League's form of government Over time, the ruling body of humanity became known as the "League". Because they had elements taken from all three of the societies, it worked easily. At the lowest level of government was planetary government. They were a democratically elected Union that ruled a particular planet, according to the planet's wishes. Then, every six years, they would send a number of representatives to a council for their region, depending on their size. The Representatives would elect one of them for the Senate, which met on Port Kane, the middle of the three ancient governments. Obviously, with the billions of people in humanity, it would be nearly impossible for each citizen of this League to vote on a candidate for the President. So, the Senate would elect a President from the most honored generals. He would be, as the ancients called him, the Mundokiir, commander of all the League's military activities. He was the top of the Executive branch. Again, with all the billions of people in the League, and the many planets, there was no need for a judicial branch, as by the time it arrived to the top, the Thurokiir would have to make a ruling. That brings me to my next point, which was one other person, in a branch of his own. He was named the Thurokiir. Before and during the first period of disunity, governments had had problems with scandals in senates and so-on. The Thurokiir's job was to make sure that the actions of the League were without dishonor, deal with any arguments that got out of hand, and that no scandals were made. He alone would answer for the League's actions to other nations, which he would head the envoys to. Strangely enough, he would be chosen in a series of duels amongst the Nil'kemorya, or the Warriors of the League.
2700-2750 NC. The first fifty years of the war were possibly the least violent. They were also when the wars were begun. Now that we have an understanding of the current political situation of the League, we may continue. It began when the Thurokiir was killed during a pirate raid on the Station of Koria (formerly Rebel II). The Mundokiir, President, call him whatever you like, failed to hold the series of duels that would allow for a new one. Within the blink of an eye, the local regions began forming reserve forces, mistrusting the intentions of their neighbors. The Senate ignored this. However, power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. With the force of a fleet behind them, the regions began picking on weaker neighbors. Soon, political alliances were made, and the Senate broke down in anger. The Mundokiir knew that the fault was his own, and led a campaign that would follow the actions of Ory-hara, and the ancient Polaris hero, Iusia. He led a war that decapitated the warring regions of their generals and admirals. When he saw the destruction he had made with his own hands, he, the only person that could have made the wrong right, killed himself. The rest of these fifty years were spent in darkness, as different regions tried to wipe out the others. It was a dark age that we must never relive.
2750-2800 NC. Towards the end of the first period, the Nil'kemorya held a series of duels and in doing so, chose the Thurokiir. Because the Senate had not been held for approximately fifty years, he declared Martial Law, and chose a new Mundokiir to head the Nil'kemorya. The Thurokiir then took asset of the situation. The area to the east of the star Polaris, was being swallowed up fastly because they had much assets, but fewer people to defend themselves than any of the others. In particular, the Holpa and Tekel regions were ganging up on the regions inside ancient Polaris space, who had become quite peaceful after the first period of disunity. The Thurokiir, after much deliberation, determined that they were without honor for attacking the defenseless, and ordered the Mundokiir to destroy the capabilities of the Holpa and Tekel fleets that were rampaging in the other regions. In one fell swoop, they destroyed the allied fleets that had made their way all the way up to Kel'ary. The other southern regions knew they would be next, but decided to cripple the central seat. Banding together, they made an attack on Port Kane, depopulating it. Only the Thurokiir escaped. For the rest of this period, the Nil'kemorya made war on the regions that were only united in an attempt to destroy them.
2800-2850 NC. Before, the new Vell-os to the west and the Wraith to the east had remained silent. They watched in silence as the Nil'kemorya attempted to destroy the military actions of the regions, but as soon as they saved one, it would stab them in the back. They were being picked to peices. And, with only a number of battlestations for them to reside on, there was always the sniping between the two sides. Finally, the Vell-os opened a joint meeting with the Wraith, and the ancient mercenary organization, the Wild Geese. As an unbiased opinion, they agreed to offer their services to the Nil'kemorya. When they did, the Nil'kemorya gladly accepted it. Together, they decided to make an attack on the homeworld of the ringleader, Aurora. The four fleets met up in Aurora, and caused destruction, killing the leaders of the region. Then, abruptly as they had entered, they left. The message was crystal clear, if the regions didn't stop sniping at eachother, there would not be any of them left. United, they knew that they would be able to match the enemy alliance. Using an ancient manuver that had been used in the Pirate Wars of old, they sent a 'convoy' to Earth. The Nil'kemorya sent a fleet to destroy it, but they were destroyed in the ambush utterly and pathetically. During the same time, the regions made campaigns that crippled the capabilities of the Nil'kemorya. Utter chaos. Finally, in the year 2849 NC, the Nil'kemorya agreed to a cease fire, giving each side time to regroup.
2850-2900 NC. Imagine yourself, the League's Senate has been disbanded. Martial Law has occured, the Nil'kemorya have been disabled by the regions, who now return to their civil wars. There is chaos everywhere. The new Vell-os in the West are waiting for the Nil'kemorya to make a move, as are their other allies, the Wild Geese and the Wraith. The incapacitated Central Government is in shambles. The only description for it is utter and complete chaos. Of course, this was the situation a mere century ago. Many of us older ones can remember it as if it were yesterday. It was this way until a man named Ory-hara appeared mysteriously. He was extremely powerful, and the new Vell-os wondered curiously about him. He knew that the guilt lay about thickly spread. Using the Nil'kemorya, Vell-os, Wraith, and Wild Geese as his tools, he launched a campaign that did what had to be done all along. In a single armaggedon, he depopulated the planet of Aurora after destroying the combined fleets of all the regions. Then he stood as the Judge, Jury, and executioner in the trial of the region leaders, Nilkemorya elders, and all other parties involved. "You," he pointed to the region leaders, "Began this war. The blame for the death of the people on Aurora, and all the other innocent people who died during these two centuries can be laid at your feet. Therefore, you will be sealed in a room which will not be opened until the universe is torn end from end." they all nodded without resistance. "And you." he pointed to the Nil'kemorya leaders and Mundokiir, "Have not only attacked, but destroyed those whom you have sworn to protect! You have lead these people in a war that will rock the ages. Your sentence will be exile to the planet of A'zar Iusia, to contemplate your sacrifice. Though I fought by you as a brother, you know I must give impartial judgement." "You," he said to the Thurokiir, "Have failed your job as a Thurokiir. You assessed the situation wrongly, while you were right, the regions of Tekel and Holpa were without honor in attacking the lesser populated regions of the North, you sided with the Northern regions as well. For one who is supposed to be impartial, you have failed. Your punishment is to leave these lands forever. Take with you your personal ship, and whatever crew is willing to join you, and leave, forever." "You," he pointed to the Vell-os and Wraith leaders, "Have put your own people at risk in the squabbles of other nations. Though your actions were honorable, you went to far in some battles, destroying even those who were wounded. Therefore, when you return to your people, you will serve them forever and ever, and do what is asked of you." "And You," he pointed to the Wild Geese, "Have misjudged what war is. War is not something you should go proudly to. War is not what you make of it. War is utter destruction and chaos. Therefore you will disband the Wild Geese unit, and join the League when it is recreated." One of the region leaders asked, "And who's going to make us?" Ory-hara turned to him angrily. "You will obey." "And you." he pointed to the Nil'kemorya, who had all gathered where he was giving out his sentence. "You followed your leaders loyally, without question of their motives. I charge you with carrying out with recreating the League." After that day, nobody ever saw Ory-hara again.
Conclusion: Now, the League has returned to what it was once. With the exception, that the Nil'kemorya also duel to become Thurokiirs of regions, and then they duel when it becomes time to choose another Thurokiir. The process has become complicated, but the Vell-os have erected a monument to Ory-hara, honoring his deeds, and so we will never forget him. How do we stop this massacre from happening again? Obviously, the Shard Wars came from the Mundokiir's failed attempt to hold a duel for the Thurokiir. However, we must dig deeper. The Shard Wars would never have happened if there was an impartial judge at the beginning. Without this, there is madness. We must be willing to do the right thing, like the first Vell-osians, the Polaris hero of Iusia, the first Ory-hara, and the second one as well. We need people who are willing to do the right thing in office.
I just did the Polaris story-line last night, so I decided to write about the Shard Wars. As I couldn't think of a story to write about them, I decided to do something different, and write a summary about it. It's just a rough draft, if u like it, go ahead and tell me, and I might clean it up. I'll probably just leave it alone though.
I like it, however, you might want to "smooth out" the language and sentance structure, as it is not as well articulated as one might expact from a professor.
Great story, though!
The style of the last fifty year section didn't really match the others. Also, you made it seem a touch too easy at the end. Ory'Hara only did what the NilKeMorya were doing all along. No big deal, it seemed.
And depopulating Aurora...man. That's a bit harsh.
Cheers, Guapo
