I'm pretty sure shield-ignoring weapons don't drop shields to zero...although I'd have to go back and test to make sure. From messing around, though, I'm reasonably sure that if you attacked a ship with a shield-ignoring weapon, and then switched to a regular weapon, the regular weapon would have to eat through the shields before it could do damage to the hull.
Right, right, I remember getting attacked by the krypt-pods, and I had full shields, but my armor kept going down.
So ya I'm pretty sure those don't touch your shields.
It does. I can't think of any real good allusions, but maybe this will suffice. Think of it as one of those egg drop projects you probably did at some point in school. Let's saying hitting the ground is a shield piercing weapon. The egg is the armor and the container is the shields. Say that you drop the egg and it gets cracked but the container it undamaged. If you want to damage the egg further, but for whatever reason can't/won't drop it, you'd have to take down container to get to the egg still, even though the egg has already been slightly damaged.
Bad allusion, but it's the best I can think of. Just think of weapons like Triphammers dropping the container and all other weapons like a knife or something you're trying to stab the egg with.
Edit: How'd I miss Switch's last post?

I have a good allusion. Just think of an x-ray. It passes through skin and reflects off of bone. Thus the skin is unaffected (lets say in a given circumstance as exposure over time can be quite damaging), yet the bone is directly affected. Thus you can have something that can pass soluble while in contact with a shield, but contacts armor as a solid. Thus doing damage to the latter and passing through the former.

If you ask me, no matter how you put it, shield-ignoring weapons are great. I feel though that they must be somewhat heavy and must be close-range only, or super slow if it's like a railgun. While the TripHammers seem cool (which means I did not get the Thunderforge yet), I don't see how they don't weigh anything.
That's my opinion. Basically, the better the weapon, the higher the tech level, the heavier it is, the more expensive it is, and etc.
Note: After reading above posts, the comment "no matter how you put it" came to the subject's mind. Due to fact that at 12:50 AM this message was posted, subject may have been very tired and came up with a very lousy and crappy statement. Subject will not be held responsible for any injuries caused by this conclusion.

It'd take ages to find the post, but pipeline, aka Dafydd Williams, stated pretty bluntly the reasoning behind it was "we didn't think anyone would be stupid enough to sell them". Their desc even warns you not to sell them.

This is probably true for balance purposes, and even more so if you have certain ships with high shields and low armor. Just imagine what EVO would have been like if the Voinians had developed shield-piercing weapons and met the Crescent races :p.
More toying around with Nova Data and MC when I get back home.
I'm guessing that when UE made that comment, it meant that the Crescent had weak, really weak, or super-crappy armor.
I wonder... who could make good graphics around this forum? And no, progress has not gone further due to no new suggestions.
Put out an ad. You'll find some people. I like to think I'm an ok graphics man. You could ask JTH's and zapp's opinions of that statement.
An ad, hmm? I don't know where to put that. Perhaps if you attached some pictures to your next post, which I would allow for now, I'll see. And maybe JTH and Zapp could also check that out as well.

Just put it on the EVDC. That's where it would go. As for an example of my work, this is something for a side project of mine and is as new as you can get.
That's a pretty good ship you got there, Shlimazel. But when you say 'put it on the EVDC', where exactly?
And how about a weapon, or outfit, or planet? Can you do those as well?
Thanks. Just make a new topic on the EVDC. Put "I'm looking for graphics for my TC" or something like that in the title.
I can do outfits, and ships, and weapon sprites. But I think I should mention that StarSword has my priority. If he says "Hey Shli, could you do some ships for me?" I'm going to lend him a hand first. But until that happens, I'm available for work. If you're interested. Of course, there's plenty of people who are better than me who you could contact, like Modesty Blaise. He might not be interested, but you could try him and see what he says.
I do not know about trying other people. I think that if the TC was worthy of not becoming vaporware, people would then agree to help us. I'm guessing they think that their work will be rendered moot if the project fell apart.
Until then, I'll post a new topic. If not, I'll ask you if you can make me a few graphics. And do you mind if I used your earlier graphic?
And do you mind if I used your earlier graphic?
I would rather you didn't. I hope to use that ship for something.
If not, I'll ask you if you can make me a few graphics.
If you need something then I can certainly lend a hand.

Ok. I'd probably just look at it.
Hmmmmmm..... How about some planets?
Sorry, but I'm not good with planets. You could contact BluePlanet about planets, though. Or Cosmic_Nuisance.
Oh. Well, then, ships?
And I thought of a new government: I called it the Isengard Union. Basically, they are isolated from most space, only bordering the Spartans, but their hypergates are connected to the Dirivel. They are also against the Spartans, and are good in spying. However, like the Meridians in Polycon, they have bad technology. I was planning for them to have tank cannons as some of their weapons, so it would probably be easy in killing them.
(EDIT) I just thought of two more governments. Remember Neo Industries, Messiah Mining, and Infinity Starsystems from Polycon EV and how they kept fighting each other? Well, I thought of something like that, except it's with seeing who can defeat the pirates first.
In EV: Scarred, there will be a Guild of Bounty Hunters still. Yes, if you go far enough in their storyline they will let you hunt Houseless warriors and pirates in Spartan space. However, there are two competitors: One is the IGALE (the I nter- G alactic A ssociation of L aw E nforcers). The IGALE Bomber is made from their shipyards and so is the IGALE Gunship, a carrier for the Bombers. They will stop at nothing to destroy the pirates and... I won't go any further. It is about their business tactics, and it would not be a good idea to talk about that here.
The second competitor would be the Feran Mercenaries. Details surrounding them are somewhat vague, and what that means is that I need to think more about them. So that's what's new so far. Now if you will excuse me, off to another thread I leave to: the Graphical Help Thread.

Well, I'm bored. I am getting to adding more information for EV: Scarred. Since nothing has happened for 2 days, I think I will now request: Shlimazel, could you draw some ships? I kind of asked this earlier, but no new posts appeared.

That depends. What do you want, how much, and how soon?
Actually, I think I might be kind of busy right now. Still, let me know what you need and I'll see what I can do.

I'd probably like a small cargo ship... basically a courier ship. A shipyard pic is good, but optionally, which I probably won't need, would be a full ship pic. But as you said, you're busy, so that wouldn't be a good idea.
The sooner it's finished, the better, but I'm not really in a rush. I'm still learning MC.
