I read somewhere that the player's ship gets a speed boost over the AI in similar ships.
Is this true? (Or perhaps the AI doesn't normally fly at 100% speed?)
If so, how much faster is the player? A certian percentage? Or a discrete ammount?

I thought it was like 33%, and that is lost, as well as the ability to reincarnate, with the usage of strict play.
In non-strict play, the player's ship is 50% faster than its strict-play equivalent. I do not know if acceleration or turning is affected.
