I'm playing a 17th level Ranger Squire, and I'm getting eaten alive by the Cyclops that are terrorizing Dernath. Those 'clops are the only thing standing between me and the valued tent. Baseline stats: str 13; dex 19; vit 21; spd 8; markshp 19; luck 18; undead 10; mind 0; life 117; gold 8499; armor 36; damge 11-15. Which should I increase next? I'm using the great helm, minotaur fur coat, neriah's gloves, iron belt, wolf bow, and elven boots. Major plugins loaded: Trinity Spells Expander Damsels Mushroom Lady WoC Bankers Guild (plus I few small plugins I created)
I'm at the point in DiD where you are to look for the trolls at the River Portals, but those trolls are nasty, and since I have a bit of a problem with regular trolls, I'll wait a while before going there. BTW, switching from Wolf Bow to a melee weapon is out of the question, because the cyclops do waaay to much damge for me to go at them directly. What should I do now? I've saved the game just before going in there, but now I'm stuck on what to do. If I was using a non-ranged weapon, it would be the Ranger Knife with the Ranger crest (a shield I added wich gives 10 armor). But, like I said, I'm not switching to a range weapon do to the damage the cyclopses are doing.

Try to get as much gold as possible, and upgrade both armor and dexterity (If you can get it) to a good amount, so that it is harder for them to hit you. Do you know Poison yet? If you do, cast that as many times as possible, so that they will slowly die. Use enfeebling, and all of the others. You might try minotaur potion. Just strengthen yourself, and go back to face them. I am right there, ready to fight them, and I cannot access Witch Finger yet (Manticores are too tough, as are Earth Elementals). And Enfeeble is a spell, not a potion. I have all the recipies except Sharpshooter and Minotaur Morph. But I need to get my speed up a little. I'm going back to Dernath to clea Fayleese's Lab, and you also get a Quicksilver ring out of that. I'll post more as my game continues.
EDIT-And RD, I have a life. Not much to it in the Winter, except school. But I haven't played PoG for a while (damn beenox), and now I just dug it out with classic. Hey, I thought you were putting us all on. Read my P.P.P.S. edit. You've beaten this game how many times now? I know what the Blue Mushroom Pub is, I've actually been in there (twice I think.)
If your post is for real, sorry about my attempt at humor. I usually take out one cyclops at a time retreating whenever necessary to recover. Take lots of healthy things in inventory - get rid of all the ookwasps first - and then pick off the cyclopes one by one.

Well, the Ookwasps are everywhere, as are the Cyclopses. It would be hard to get rid of the, because once a Cyclops sees me, it's after me. But now killing them off will be easier becuase I have the Quicksilver ring. Lavuninth Powder helped there because those theives do a lot of damage (the chief does almost as much damage as a Lilith), and the powder slowed them down enough to give me time to kill them with my EBoD. Now I'm off to try the cyclops again.
And about what Ducky said: Ha ha ha. Doing something like that will earn you (me) negitive karma faster than you can say "use your karmaban powers..." Actually, I will have time to work on this tomorrow. My family is going to a Thanksgiving dinner party with relavtives some distance away, and I can bring my iBook in the car, and kill Manticores on the way. By that time, I should be ready to try for Witch Finger.
OK, progress report. I saved Dernath and got the tent. I was out of stuff to cast poison with while fighting the Cyclops, but it took a LOT of hard shell powder (not to mention a lot of crossbow bolts) to kill them off. Heading over to Witch Finger now.
when killing cyclops (or sea giants, for that matter) I usually just bring along a lot of lavunith powder and do the retreat thing when they are slowed down.
It works for me. Lavunith powder is awesome.

Yes. With a lot of Lavuninth powder and the Great Bow of Vyro, I can take out sea giants, although it takes a long time.

You use your shield, right? Blocking their attacks helps somewhat.

Blocking does help! Personally I'd go with the wolf claws if you can get them. Upping your armor by buying better helmets, and belts helps a lot as well. If you go back to Norgah, he sells boots of Amrad or something that give good armor and +1 to speed i think. Other than that, I always go for vitality, vitality, vitality in the beginning so I can get as much hp as possible (even if it means running through all those earth elementals and wryms when I'm at level 8 or something to get to that wonderful blue mushroom!).
