...and the weapons I'm making rock.
The title says it all. Here is a list of a bunch of weapons I've made both today and yesterday.
Flak Missile: It's a missile with a big explosion that submunitions into several bits of flak, which have their own explosions. What you get is a very sweet cluster of explosions.
Shotgun Rockets: Like in Heli Attack 2 and 3, if you've ever played those. Shoots a projectile which instantly submunitions into three rockets, which spread out a little.
Rocket Bomb: Drops a single stellar grenade, which, after a small wait, submunitions into three raven rockets which shoot out in a similar pattern to that of the shotgun rockets. The "submunitions fire towards nearest target" flag is set. However, it shoots at any ship that is close by, not just hostile ships. Kind of annoying if you're in a high-populated system.
Side-Firing Missiles: Shoots an unguided projectile (IR missile graphic) with -90 innacuracy, so it shoots out of the side of the ship but still faces forward. Then it submunitions into a guided missile with normal (non-negative) accuaracy. Gives the effect that the missile "rolls" out of the side of the ship before the thrusters kick in. It would look graphically smoother if the first weapon had graphics of a missile without any thruster glow.
Particle Cannon: This is just a normal beam weapon, except it has a really short life span, giving the impression that it is just fired once instead of in a continuous stream. If you don't know what I mean, think of the shock rifle from Unreal Tournament. It's a beam, but not a continuous one. I had to set the innacuracy to 0. If it was any higher, the beam would jerk around, ruining the effect I wanted to create.
So what do you think?
Fixed the beam innacuracy problem. I had to set the beam's life to 1. I didn't try that initially because I was under the impression that if the lifespan was one frame, the beam would fade out at the end of its range (this is a really long-range beam). Apparently I was wrong.
I think you should release it as a plug.

Not before he drops the Flak Cannon idea.
It's already been brainstormed, constructed and put into Rigante. Your description is almost identical to that of this existing component, i would like it if it stayed unique to Rigante, and it's original creator, Zaire. Crimp, i thought you would be one to know that
Your speaking as if it is already unique to Rigante. I bet if I searched, I could find an older flak weapon. But I'll respect your wishes.
On a different note, I think I'll but these missile grenades in Dogfighter Elite. You won't be able to buy them, but they'll be given to a bunch of special mission ships. Imagine: you fly into a fleet of freighters to take them out, and all of the sudden their fighter escorts drop grenades that shoot missiles at you.
Ravenheart, do you have anything better to do with your time besides torment other developers about things that happen to also be in Rigante? You do not have a patent on the flak missile idea. Other people can use it if it was their idea. However, what's even worse is that you seem to be under the impression that the other developers should remove it, rather than the other way around. Why should people have to remove things from their plug-ins so that you can use them without fear of people thinking one was ripped from the other? If you want to make sure nobody thinks an idea was ripped, remove it yourself or contact the person about solving it instead of telling them to delete stuff.

I distinctly remember a proof-of-concept plug-in that barisaxguy sent my way while I was designing weapons for Retribution. Like the flak cannon described above, it launched a single shell which blasted itself into a shower of exploding fragments.
When did he show me this? It was about one and a half years ago. How long had it been on his drive? Definitely more than that. Somehow, I doubt you'd be the first to come up with such an idea.
I love them. You need a team so you can turn this into a plug-in. I especially like the side-firing missile idea. I'd love that.

oh god, please don't start that garbage. the flak cannon is one of the oldest ideas in the gaming world (having it's origins, surprisingly enough, in real life! (/sarcasm)). no one can claim it as their own, its been around for hundreds of years (ever hear of a Howitzer? timed air-burst artillary designed to decimate infantry in entrenched positions), it's unique to jack squat, and bickering over who had which idea first is the best way to kill a comunity fast, i've seen it happen before, i'd rather not see it happen again.
back on subject, sounds freaking awesome. to get the missiles smoother, you can just use PSP of Photoshop to chop the rocket flare off, hell, i can do it now and send you the new pics.
freaking awsome dude.
ok, here it is, i accidentally did radar by mistake though..... they are just the rleD and rle8 in JPEG format waiting t be imported. radarmissile.zip (10.64K) Number of downloads: 46

I think what he's getting at is that his flak cannon and the one I did do exactly the same thing. After reading the thread about it (on a different forum), I realive that they are pretty much exactly the same. After all, I only made this after I saw that thread, and thought, "Hey, a flak missile. Sounds cool, I'll try it out myself." I never read the thread in detail, but enough to pick up a few ideas.
No one has the right to claim exclusivity to a particular implementation of basic engine features. Anyone who says otherwise is a First Class, Grade-A, Lesser Spotted ######-Bite.
And for the record; we've had just such a weapon up and running in game for well over a year.
<vicousattacksnip>
I have several reasons to be suspicious.
1. Crimp is a member at the Outpost, and will have read the topic entitled "Flak Cannon".
2. Crimp admits to have read the topic and subsequently adding the idea to a plug of his own.
I have to say, i agree with all of you when it comes to this "claiming" business. I was merely suspicous that Crimp here had directly taken it from the Outpost, which was then proved a correct assumption, by Crimp himself.
And orca, though you may be on homeground here, it doesn't mean you can accuse me of things i have never done before. This is the first time in my entire develoiping career that i have accused someone of stealing and idea. If you think i am wrong, give proper, contextual evidence before blasting off "Oh Raven you bastard, you did this, you did that" bullcrap. I personally detest the way you think you can take advantage of your assumingly "senior" status here, and how you bend it towards your advantage to get an edge over a perfectly justified argument. Seniority is something to be used both sensibly and responsibly. If you are going to act like a child and twist my own history before my eyes, do so via PM, so that i can waste you where you stand without getting a perfectly sensible topic locked.

Ravenheart, nothing personal, just a bit here. You should calm down. Let it die. There is no point at all. Regardless of wether or not he made his own flack cannon or whatnot it would work in much the same way as anyone elses. You are not the only one who has made one- from the old Kemet boards, if you'd look...
{edit}And BTW, regardless of yours, mine or anyones personal feelings about Orca, perpetuating any kind of us/them attitude does not make things any better for anyone, including yourself. ev-nova.net is maintained by someone with thousands of ASW posts and the domain is owned by an ASW moderator with another thousands of posts (I'm not going to go checking for actual numbers, though I am certain that evula has thousands of posts. DA I'm not so sure about). Factionalism only makes things worse for everyone.
Take a stress pill and think things over.

I think you're rather missing the point. Crimp could have gotten the idea from a number of places, what does it matter that he got it from you?
It's not like you originated the idea of a flak cannon, or the execution used within the context of the Nova engine - you hold no rights what so ever to make any kind of demand of anyone else using the mechanism, irrespective of whether the idea was spawned from your forums or not. If Crimp had duplicated your resources and re-bundled them as his own, then fair enough - but as it is, he read a description of how the engine might be rigged to produce a particular effect, and implemented it.
If you're going to be that mind-numbingly s###ty about issues like this, I strongly suggest that you put a copyright disclaimer on your forums and/or you make them private. If you share concepts you want to protect in a public environment with no concern for what people might do with that concept, you're just asking to have your ideas whored and pimped. If you feel like you've been wronged, it's only because you're blasΓ© about security and you only have yourself to blame.
In short; go away, grow up and come back when you can play sensibly.
(edit) for teh typos

Might be rigged?
Why do you phrase it in such a way? It has already been implemented into the plug-in, and works absolutely perfectly.
Besides, i didn't even come up with the idea, a team member name Zaire did, and i am only defending what should be his work, his idea and his material. I think that you should be thinking things over and coming back.
Put yourself in my position. I have dedicated all my free time to a project, as well as designing, hosting, maintaining and paying for it's website. It has been in production for about a month now, and the strain is showing as i struggle to cope with schoolwork. A previously assumed "original" and ingenious idea is thought up and implemented into the plug through hard work. Suddenly, out of the blue, our dear Crimp comes straight from the Outpost forums with an identical idea, and almost identical function. He admits to have been inspired by the topic, and admits that his version is almost identical. I spot this, and with all the emotion, stress and work that was involved with making the Flak Cannon behind me, i respond by asking that he remove it from the plug-in, suspicious of a direct steal from the plug-in - based on the fact that Crimp has been at the forums for quite some time, and will have seen the topic and all of it's outreaches and discussion.
What would you do? And no, don't reply as if you knew everything in the above 5 or so posts was going to happen, reply as if you were in my position, at that particular time, with all the reasons i had to ask.
I feel a bit sorry for Crimp here, we are wasting his topic with pointless and rude debate. Answer me via PM so that we don't defoul this idea any longer.
Hehe, forgot the really important part...
...looks good Crimp; I particularly like the side-launching rockets

Oh, so now you're concerned for Crimps feelings?
You both should go listen to some Mozart and work on your plugs. No further point to this
I recommend Symphony number 29. Well inspires me
I prefer Rachmaninov's Symphony #2 in E minor
Im filing a subpeana against you, sir Ravenheart, and would like the entire contents of your hard drive, specifically anything from Rigante. Any element I find there that has components based upon any components of any of the plugs on my drives, with my drives bearing older creation dates, I will have for force you to cease and desist in creating. Thank you.
And stress and work in creating a flak cannon? ...
ok
