A dev tool that would be useful

I had a thought today, about a dev tool which would be very useful, but doesn't appear to exist in any of the current editors.

I'd love the ability to select a range of IDs (or a list of IDs), and for some resource type, set a particular field to a given value for every resource in that field automatically.

Expanding on the same idea, it might also be useful to be able to do the same, except specify a range for random values, rather than specifying one particular value.

For example, being able to select a range of spobs all from the same govt, and automatically set one of the special tech fields in all of them to the special tech of that govt.

That could be nice... why don't you make it.

That philosophy is all well and good when it comes to plugs, but with tools, it doesn't quite work.

First and formost, I'd have to start from scratch, whereas those people who are already working on dev tools could simply add a menu option and use their established routines.

Second, while I know quite a bit of C, and I could probably learn how to work with resources....GUIs are one area that I haven't learned about. Anything I made would probably be command-line.

Mainly, it's a matter of duplicated effort. I might consider doing it myself, but only if there's no one better qualified who picks up the idea.

It can be done on a spreadsheet. And plug can be exported to and from spreadsheets. Problem solved?

That's one way to do it, sure. I just meant it would be a useful automated feature for future versions of the current tools.

You could suggest it to the chap who's making iNova. I'd give you a link, but ev-nova.net appears to be down.

hmmm, this seems like a nice a idea. Once i get the new cool feature added it should be really quite easy to add this.

http://tomhancocks.exoboards.com Thats the site to iNova for anyone who is interested in becoming a beta tester. Note that not everyone will be accepted for testing and you require Mac OS X 10.2+

I'll add that Jaguar users are especially needed
