new weapon idea

if any of you ever played battlefleet gothic, you might be familiar with the idea of powered plows, or as i call it, power rams.

it's basically a plow-shaped ram equipped in the front of the ship to basically "plow" through an enemy ship. when activated, it becomes surrounded by an energy field - concentrated shield particles, emp emissions, near-acidic odor from a toilet module, whatever. i will post a sample plugin with the weapon in it when i get home. i originally intended to keep it a surprise for my upcoming plugin, but i am really excited about this new concept and wanted to share it with you guys.

I like the idea but the technology behind it boggles me somewhat... Coherant electron fields? Something to do with mass-energy equivalence?

I have experimented somewhat with the idea, I think it would work best as a Frigate class ship equiped with the weapon, which would be so large that it would require a specially designed ship. Similar to the ion cannons in homworld. In the end I decided that lances were better.

Energy lance:
An energy lance is a long pole mounted on the bow of a ship, the lance acts as an energy sink and any excess energy from the ships power grid is pooled in the lance instead of the primary energy sink. Once the lance is brought within an oposing ship's magnetic field the energy makes a jump from the lancehead to the ship. The resultant power surge destroys and damages shielding and can seriosly disrupt the ship's systems.

by the way, i am having problems with few planned features my plugin: i want to make it so that capital ships have near-invulnerable shields, but have to disable them in order to use their weapons including fighter bays. also their shield will be disabled when they are out of energy, and capital ships will have inherent energy drain at a very small rate in order to represent the heavy shielding. how can i come to achieve this?

I don't think that there is a provision in the engine to allow shields to be lowered. Perhaps a range 0 weapon that did a large ammount of shield damage to simulate lowering them, and another one with negative damage to restore it? Though I think that you can't have a -energy weapon though...?

If I recall correctly, there was also a ramming weapon in FH that you could buy, and it was pretty damn powerfull... You could also make it do damage to your own ship (by giving it a proximity blast thingy), which would be kinda logical...

But in FH it did no damage to your ship...
