Ship frames

I have this brilliant idea, though I'm not sure if it's origonal.

I want to have a plugin in which you can buy ship frames and outfit them. I already figured out that I can do part of that through having a ship that has no manuverability, no speed, no acceleration, and larger mass space than a stock ship. But once you buy it you can't go anywhere till it's outfitted, which can be a problem if the outfitings arent availible at the same place the frame is, how can I get around this problem?

This question counts for both nova and EVO.

This seems to me that it should work:

Have the tech level for the shďp hull match the tech level for the oütfs, and have the oütfs available 100 percent of the time. Alternatively, have only lower level oütfs always available and have more expensive oütfs which add more points available less frequently.

I'm pretty sure this works. It was used in a plug I was doing graphics for back in the Override days. Plug never got finished though...

I kinda figured that, but It would be nice if maybe you could buy the frame, but you want to outfit it with top 'o' the line engine systems from somewhere else and have to get there. It would be possible to give the ship minimal manuvering stats, but that might ruin the effect. On the other hand, in marathon manuvering pods are mentioned, at one point in a scinario a group of stranded humans attach manuvering pods to a wreaked ship's hull and fly it out. So maybe I could use the same idea without ruining the effect. It's a tough call.

There is also the problem that if you buy a ship frame with a graphic that looks like a frame, you're in a mess. I'll have to use a stock graphic.

Not really. You can make ship graphics change with outfits. It could be quite easy to do. You have a basic frame and have maybe three different upgrade router you can take for it - each produces a different set of graphics when the outfit is applied. After that you could have those applied upgrades make new outfits available for that specific upgrade route. It could produce a cool little feature of a game, but I wouldn't base all ships in the game on this method.

That would work in nova, but not in EVO.

I have solved my problem on both ends anyway.
Right now I needed this information for my TC. But now that I know what I can do in nova I'm starting to think about making a plug that allows you to buy, say, terripin frames, or viper frames. In fact, Olaf made his pirate viper off of blank frames. The only problem being I havent been able to make any graphics yet that would look good in nova. :frown:
