Once I purchase/capture a Kestrel in Nova, b8888 is set. My question is simple: What does this bit do? Additional question: Is there a list or something that shows when which bit is set and what it does? BTW, the additional question does not refer to the general stuff that is explained in the Nova bible. I mean specific information about the bits used/occupied in Nova. Like this: b123 / set by mission RID 123 / makes oütf RID 123 available

b8888 is set On Purchase of all capital class ships. The only other resource that I've found with b8888 is cron 222, which triggers "Advanced Pirate news".

Strange I would understand that if it were set OnCapture, so the Pirate is the player and the others think it was authorized by the Bureau. But why would the purchase of a capital ship enable these news? Except of course, the game would become more difficult once you own a capital ship, that is, more marauding Pirates. Perhaps b8888 also triggers special düdes that increase the average number of Pirate ships in certain systems.
Sigh, EVN has given me some puzzles I can't solve (e.g. Zephyr).
Whoops, yeah... b8888 is also set On Capture of all capital ships. Don't know if that helps any more for understanding why though.
Arion's idea about making the game more difficult makes sense. You would want to keep the biggest pirates from showing up right at the beginning of the game, so that a new pilot would have time to get established. Unless, of course, you were a Sadistic Basta-um... Basilisk... and wanted to throw Manticores, Pirate Carriers and Class IV Pirate Valks at a player in a shuttle.
------------------ "... Look, I designed this thing, so I know exactly what I'm doing..." "MISSILE SELF-DESTRUCT ACTIVATED: 5... 4... 3..." "... Of course, I could be wrong..." - Me.
I think they still show up, but they don´t attack you if b8888 is not set.. I have seen plenty of manticores while in a shuttle, but they don´t attack me. If you´re in a capital ship, you´ll probably have lots of money and they´ll attack you.. makes sense..
btw. do ships like vipers still attack you alone when you´re in a capital ship....?
------------------ And then there were silence.................

NCB 8888 is also to be found in the AppearOn field of seven ships that are used by Pirate düde resources. So essentially the game play becomes more difficult due to the presence of more Pirates when b8888 gets set. This is the reason that the crön "news" item is triggered to warn the player about the increased threat.

Ha, that's it. b8888 activates düde 260 (Marauders - Advanced dude) and 261 (Pirates - Advanced dude). These düdes use the ships 399 (Valkyrie, class I), 400 (Pirate Starbridge, class , 401 (Pirate Valkyrie, class II), 402 (Pirate Argosy, stolen tech), 403 (Pirate Enterprise, stolen tech) and 404 (Pirate Viper, heavy fighter class). All these ships have an Availability of b9999 (something else to find out) and an AppearOn of (guess what) b8888. No Manticores or Carriers, however. I looked into the systems and there are indeed several of them where düdes 260 and 261 can be found. For instance, both can be found in the systems Wolf 359 and Outbound.
Side note: are Manticores dangerous? I can kill them in a small ship like a Lightning or Thunderbolt. The trick is simply to stay out of the Ion Cannon's range. Torpedoes are easily dodged. All you need are long ranged primary weapons (FP-Cannons, Railguns) or plenty of missiles.
Okay, question answered, thank you everyone.
For the additional question, it would be an awful lot of work to document all the bits and their various consequences and links. What you can do to find out, though, is output the data files to text with ConText or EVNEW (depending on the platform), open the text files, and run a search for the bit you're interested in.
