How do you convert music (in AIFF or WAV) into an actual res-edit file that can be read by the game? To be more specific I'm talking about EV Override, when I opened the music file there were two resources: 'snd' and 'window'.
Is there a program that can convert audio into an snd resource? (remember this isn't nova)
The last one to answer the question is a rotten egg. Cheers. --gav

Get hold of any program that can deal with both AIFFs and System 7 Sound format files... I believe that (url="http://"http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/4124")SoundApp(/url) does this excellently. Then simply convert the AIFF/WAV file into a System 7 Sound and open this in ResEdit. A handy snd resource will be sitting there ready to be copied into your plugin.

There's a particularly funky little app that comes with most new consumer macs that is fantastic for this - Felt Tip Sound Studio. However if memory serves, you have a proper mac which doesn't have these added goodies, so you can download the demo from (url="http://"http://www.felttip.com/")here(/url).
Great program. Just save as system 7 sound and then copy that into Res-Edit

Don't forget EVO is picky about the sounds it accepts, so the resources should be 11kHz, 8 bit, mono, uncompressed.

Sorry I took so long to reply. Cheers for all the info, you've helped me out a bundle!

Hey! nobody ever told me that they had to be 8 bit too!!!! Oh boy, you know what this means!

Use a program like SoundEffects or SndSampler to open the files. Copy/paste into ResEdit. Or convert the file into Sys7-sound, open in ResEdit, then copy/paste. Nothing's easier. Nova is much more delicate about this.

Well, the problem is that the snd (i.e. System 7 Sound) format has a resource fork, so there's no way to have such a file in Windows. You're best off converting something to AIFF or WAV, then jump over a Mac or a Mac emulator and use SoundApp (there are PPC and 68k versions) to convert that to snd. Of course, SoundApp can take care of a ton of formats anyway.
My Windows sound converter of choice, though, is the free dMC (I can't remember what it stands for)...http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm
One more thing -- as for the 11.127 kHz, 8-bit mono requirement for EVC and EVO sounds, that only applies to the sounds themselves; there seems to be a little more freedom with the music (like the intro clip), so you could play around with that and see what works.

Why do you want it for Windows? As far as I know, there are no windows versions of EVC and EVO. Or is my knowledge out of date?
Aside from the EVN ports, no. But then, it's a moot point since plugins for the ports would be nova plugs anyway.
If you import a wav into EVNEW, convert that to the mac plug format and open that in ResEdit, can you move the snd resource into another plugin?

Yep. Once the resource file is made (what the converter does), ResEdit can make anything it likes with resources inside it, like moving them (thus the beauty of the resource format).
The intro clip does not require that many restrictions as it is run by some system call, whereas in-game, the engine uses the AmbrosiaSoundTool developped for Maelstrom that allows 4 sounds to be played at the same time, but that version only accepts the restrictions we've talken about (especially, when Maelstrom has been updated with that sound tool, it required those restrictions making some sound replacements no longer work, I should know, I have a such one for which I keep Maelstrom 1.0.x, and never bothered to convert them).
Oh, and, by the way, I know enough of the sound resource format (found in Inside Mac: sound) and the wav format to translate uncompressed wav to snd resource and back with an hex editor and ResEdit by hand, but don't ask me to do it.
