Hi Guys, this is my first post, so be gentle...
I'm working on a new ship for evn and I've gotten the sprite and mask down (well, it's a little jerky-- I'm going to reanimate it eventually). The shän, shp, pict and the dsc resources are mostly understandable, thanks to some awesome EVNEW tooltips! I basically copied from novadata1 if I got confused.
The ship works fine, but I can't buy outfits! No IFF, no reloads, no nothing! Why?
My ship uses Polaran, Fed, and Auroran techs, but somehow I don't think that's the problem.
I had problems understanding the contrib/require bits. So I set them to 0. Am I even close? I set tech level 4, gov is -1 and availability: !b424 & P30 (whatever that means). I set b8888 on purchase and capture (the yoohoo, pirates bit). So whadoidonow? Did I miss any flags?
Please help, The grey radar screen hurts my eyes. :^)

Yeah, you need to set some contribute bits. I'm not sure which ones but just take a look at a civilian ship like the shuttle or something and set the bits the same.

To be clearer, "availability: !b424 & P30" will prevent your ship from being offered for sale under certain conditions. (See the nova bible section on control bits to understand how this works -- it looks like putting a "P" test in a plug is pointless, since you can't use plugs if you aren't registered.)
You can safely leave that field blank.

Don't worry, I figured it out last nite. You count the digits! Hex means 16. (I was a math major.)
The !b424 & P30 string I believe merely requires licensing of the purchaser. When I left availability blank, the ship showed up in the shipyard but was un-buyable.
You set contrib to 0x00000000 + 0x00000001 = 0000000000000001 (in EVNEW contrib field)
You set requirements to 0x000000C3 + 0x00000000 = 000000C300000000 (in EVNEW req field)
Arcane, but hardly rocket science. Or isn't it?...
Done and done. Now I have avionics!
Works fine now.

By the way, Badanov, two or three things to get you started: -the tooltips you see actually come from the Bible (to be capitalised), also named the Nova Bible to help distinguish it from this story of a guy who get crucified 2k years or so ago (the story doesn't tell accurately when). So go read the Bible, it's actually quite light compared to that other one. -we warn people 3 days before killing them, to give them a fair time for them to flee. -you use EVNEW since you're on a PC, but it's the same thing for every single editor (NT, MC and EVONE), just some interface variations, they basically do the same thing. -to write those dotted letters Matt Burch put in the EV resource types long ago (in 1995-6) to avoid overlaps, you do some odd alt-#### thingies on your PC, but on these boards it's better to write & e uml; for ë, this way it is sure to display well on all browsers (they don't translate very well between PC and Mac).
If ships require a contribute bit for you to purchase most outfits, it's because in Vell-oss ships, by contrast, you can no longer buy these, because the outfits have the corresponding bit set in their require field (this system seems complicated at first, especially as you meet it very soon when making a new shïp, but it allows for many interesting dynamic changes, more fexible than with mission bits).

Yes, actually, my C key was acting up (and still is...).
Edit: problem solved. there was something in my keyboard that I had not bothered to try and stop from getting in. After removing the C and F keys, I got it out.

the '!b424' thing is part of the Vell-os string, actually.
When the Bureau enslaves you, they set bit 424, which is supposed to prevent you from buying stuff... Thus most items in the game have '!b424' in their availability.

Most of the outfits in the game have an availability bit that is set by all non-Vell-os ships. Your ship is probably not setting it, which causes the game to think that you are "flying a Vell-os ship" even though you're not.
