Hey folks, I'm trying to make heads or tails of the news function within the oops resource, how to implement it and whether it actually works or not. More specifically, the -2 in the stellar field. How does this work? Is there a particular non-documented #str resource that these will refer to? Or, is this an oversight in updating the bible from Override to Nova?
Basically, I'm working on patching up the EVO port to Nova, and there seems to be a problem in translation from the way news was done in Override to how it is in Nova. Maybe the best (only?) way is to use crons. Thoughts?
------------------
News reports have indeed been moved from öops to cröns in Nova, I believe, you should use cröns.

Thanks, Zacha. I figured that would be my best bet.
Also, on a loosely related note, I'm trying to figure out the other translation problems (from Override to Nova) within the oops resource of the port. The 'Active On' field of many disasters has !b1008. I'm quite sure this is wrong, but not sure exactly what it should be, since this was the one resource in Override where a '1' wasn't the negator. (If I'm reading my EVO Bible correctly, '2' and '3' were the negators in the oops resource). It also doesn't help that I'm a Windows user, and have never managed to correctly run an emulator, so I can't check the original data.
Basically, I'm wondering which of these two would be correct: !b8 or b8. If anyone has the original data it would be a great help. Thanks.
You know, if you really feel like it, the original EV and EVO are distributed as sits, so you can try to download them, decompress them with Stuffit for Windows, keep the files in .bins, translate them in .rez (though it is likely to fail at this point, but who knows, it might work...) and read the data with EVNEW. It might work. Sadly I'm on one of my school's PC right now, sorry I can't help you.

The fields are wrong. They don't match up -- that's partly why a conversion program is needed to convert EV/EVO plugs to be compatible to EVN plugs.

Too bad then, I just thought it might work when opened with EVNEW, it would obviously not really be an EVN compatible plug.

I just ran "Override Data 2" from the original game through ConText, even though the program is only designed for EVN. (Is there a program out there designed to dump EVO plug data to a spreadsheet?)
I got garbage characters in an "ActivateOn" column, but it's patterned garbage. I did some checking with Mission Computer, and I think these are the changes between original and port:
oops 128-139: assorted mission bits just got a "b" prefix. 140-157, 169, 171, 172, 174: mission bit 1008 became !b1008 158-168, 170, 173, 175-179: mission bit -1 became no data in ActivateOn
Edit: Also, the -2 in the stellar field for oops 128-139 is the same in the EVO "Override Data 1." ------------------ (url="http://"http://home.comcast.net/~drtrowel/")Dr. Trowel's E.S.W.P.(/url) -- Featuring Cold Fusion graphics for EVN Override and an EVN:O outfit bug fix. Thanks Doc, I think that answers my question. I'm fairly certain it means that the port's 'Active On' field should read 'b8', for the Miranu/Strand disasters.
Now, to figure out how to make a cron only run once, without introducing new ncb's and corrupting players pilot files...
The simplest way to make a crön run only once is to introduce a new ncb (come on, it won't kill you... there are plenty of unused ncbs to use, especially the ones above 1000, as they didn't exist in EVO) bxxxx, that is activated in Onstart, and have activeOn check for b8 & !bxxxx.
Indeed, I've used context with EV(O) plugs, and though it expects more data in most resources and therefore puts whatever it find after it, it's usable.
OK, I've done a Thing of Possible Usefulness.
I ran Override Data 1 & 2 -- from the EVO game, not the port -- through ConText, extracting all "non-external" resources -- everything but graphics and sounds, I think. The results are here, in an archive of appx 124k: (url="http://"http://home.comcast.net/~drtrowel/EVOdata.sit")http://home.comcast....wel/EVOdata.sit(/url) . Many fields came out as garbage, but, as ZP indicated, a lot of others came out in useful form. Perhaps this will answer a few questions for slouch and anyone else out there who is using a PC to try to understand the mysteries of the bugs in the EVO port. Perhaps not! I can't delve deeper right now -- I'm on a "real-life" deadline.
Maybe I should do dumps from the EVO Nova port, too.... Maybe Monday....

Thanks, Doc. Those files have been helpful. One thing (and please forgive my ignorance), the data is still in terms of "Nova" data. Meaning, Override specific fields are not shown. Is there any way to extract just the Override data? It would be even more useful this way. Thanks again!

Sadly, that's an artifact of using the ConText program to do something it was never meant to do. It expects to be fed data in EVN formats; I think it just chugs through each resource, putting each field it encounters into a new column, and giving the columns the labels they "should" have if they were ordered and named as in EVN. At least that's what I think ConText does.... I'll have another look at the files when I get a chance.
