Hi,
I am developing all new worlds/stories for EV: Nova. I am looking to see if anyone has some ship designs out there that they might like to contribute. I do not have time to make my own graphics, so I will either have to rely on the standard ones, or ones that people contribute. If you have any that you would like to see used, please tell me! YOu will be credited for them, of course.

You will quickly find that people who are good at making graphics for Nova are few and far between. Generally most graphics people are already tied up with projects, and to be honest, you haven't given any incentive for people to provide graphics for you. "You will be credited..." woo... I'll be credited. Okay. I'm being credited for my other projects, what makes your project so great? You have no reputation as a plugin maker, you haven't given any details about what the project will be, and you haven't told us the scope of your project. Good graphics are very time consuming to make, so why should I invest my time to help you? We need to be convinced that you are going to see your project through to the finish. We need to be convinced that it won't be a waste of our time to shunt aside our personal lives for you. If you can't do that, then I'm sorry, you're going to have to go with graphics that someone else has already made.

A more sound idea would be to use pre-existing graphics until you have all of the missions and everything else finished. If (it's rare that these things don't become vaporware) you do all of that, I'm sure that you'd be able to find people to do graphics for you. Either way, good luck!

There are plenty of decent ship design "shipyard" sites out there, mostly designed for EVC / EVO -- Evula's empire and (url="http://"http://www.modenstudios.com")www.modenstudios.com(/url) (under "Resource Freighter 3") have particularly good links pages for shipyard sites. Like others have said, you can then find someone to upgrade your plug to custom-built sprites once you've created something that shows people that you can handle other aspects of plug-making. Or you can make your own sprites, either before or after writing other resources -- there are plenty of discussion threads here about good and/or free programs. Best of luck!

I was just asking if there were any pre-existing ships that anyone was letting others use. I don't want to go rummaging through other people's things and just take what I need.
Thank you those who gave more "constructive" feedback.
you might be able to find somebody who will give you a ship they put on the Gallery. for Instance. I'm getting Virmor's Aquasian ships, which I asked for.

??? I doubt anyone was suggesting that you just "rummage through other people's things and just take what you need" without permission. The shipyard sites I mentioned are pretty much there for people like you -- they are collections of pre-existing ships made by people who want others to use them in plugs. You just download 'em, use w00tware's EnRLE on 'em, stick 'em in your plug, and thank the author in your ReadMe.
Well, first of all, don't be so sure you'll finish this. Just because AnubisTTP made a TC, it doesn't mean you can see it and go "oh, I'm gonna do that!" Making a TC (or in your terms, an "All New Universe") takes, time, dedication, patience, and experience. As far as we know, you have el squato experience. It's much more difficult than you think. I hope to make one someday, but I'm not making any guarantees, and more importantly, I'm not pressuring myself.
Second, you will not get much praise for your graphics if you use pre-made ones. It's better to have original, ****ty-looking ships than premade, super-1337 ships; it shows people that you took the time to do your best and make your own stuff.
With these in mind, go finish something worth announcing, and maybe someone will volunteer to do graphics for you.

About your second point, I'm not so sure about that. I think most people would just judge how good the graphics were and only that. People may just care about the absolute quality and not effort, since they just want to play a decent plug-in, and many people couldn't tell it was premade either. But as a developer, I'd say that orcaloverbri9 is right about how you should take time to do your own stuff.

These people would be the ones who are suckers for graphics, and even if the plot is awesome, they will be turned off by bad graphics because they're too shallow to consider the effort spent on them rather than the quality. I would never expect to make awesome graphics, but I intend to try my hardest. And those shallow people? Screw them. Let them go play an add-on with good graphics and a sucky plot (not to imply that all add-ons with good graphics have sucky plots) instead.
Well, the problem is that most people think like that — even those of us who do look at a plug with bad graphics and an incredible plotline usually say "that was a great plotline, but the graphics sucked." Nobody ever says "awesome! that plotline was great and I really admire the effort spent on these crappy pics".

Like Zap said, unfortunately, that's most of the gaming population. Even if it wasn't that way, how can you tell something is pre-made unless you frequent the free shipyards which I doubt many of us do? I'm developing a TC and I haven't even been to them. I doubt the average player has either.

Sorry Orca, i'm gonna have to side with Zap and Zhouj. Most players admire quality more than effort. Other devers might be happy to see that you worked hard on your graphics, but the players propably wouldnt. Granted, I think people would still play it unless the graphics REALLY sucked (see: flats - i seriously cant play Override Port without Cold Fusion) -Az

I agrees with Azr. I would prefer a combination of excellent graphics and storylines.

Granted, but anyone would, including me.
That's a good point that it is, indeed, most of the gamin population. However, I wouldn't mind playing something with terrible graphics if it had a good plot, but I suppose most would. Ah, well, a good portion of the people playing these are developers, so I'm sure I wouldn't be alone in caring more for the effort than the quality. But then, if they put a couple triangles together and said it was a capit(a? o?)l ship, I would trash it immediately. A couple triangles is hardly effort; if I can see they did not at least spend some time on the graphics, forget it; it's trashed (or rmed, as the case may be :)).
You don't know what you are getting yourself into, do you? Graphics are the easiest part really. They are everywhere. The problem will be balancing the game, creating governments, writing dozens and dozens of descriptions, and of course figuring out a good plot. I would offer my help with the descriptions, but you might not like my writing.
Good luck. And try not to eat him alive people.

quite so. Considering that it will take a while to get to the best missions it is important that the player not get sick of the yucky graphict before he/she even gets to the Interesting part. Thats what happened to me and the Quantimire trillogy. Even with my limited Skills with 3D drawing I could have made ships like the Qiuantimire trillogy ships. they were just ovels and circles and tubes.
I tried to get graphics done for me and got the same sort of answers you're getting F17 Stealth. I suggest getting a 3D program. start wacking out your best efforts at what you want. you'll get better and better. untill eventually you'll be making ships that you like a lot. Then go back a redo ships you've already done or start making ships for your plug. You can do you're ships yourself, all it takes is practice. (Isn't it annoying that everything seems to take practice.)
(This message has been edited by Captain Phillips (edited 02-29-2004).)
The general suggestion is to use ships that have already been made as placeholders during the development of the plug, and then once you've made serious progress, then pose the question to the boards, explaining the general idea of the plug (no need to give away all your secrets), and maybe which resource sets you've completed. If someone likes your concept, suggest that they email you for more details before they offer their services. I like to use that as a general rule, even though I just broke it recently - mainly because I feel that I can use the graphics that I make for a different project if the one I'm working on falls through.
