OS X Editor

Well, ResEdit is being annoying to use in OS X mode, and EVONE is even worse. I can't open files properly when I initially run it, then it refuses to save anything, before it refuses to quit without me killing it manually. What other options do I have for editting natively in OS X? I'd prefer to not have to deal with the lag in ResEdit and occasional crash. I've heard of Resorcer but it's rather expensive, has anyone used it before?

Well, knowing Jeff, he'll end up posting on this board and asking about it. 🙂

However, send all bug reports to him (support@ariossoftware.com, as I recall). Remember, it's a public beta , don't expect some über-editor.

Oddly enough, ResEdit is more stable for me under Classic than starting up in OS 9. Then again, OS 9 for me is really ed up (over half my applications won't run because of the same bull error...).

Anyway, your only other option is (url="http://"http://davidarthur.evula.net/mc.php")MissionComputer(/url), which is becoming an excellent editor. Once David finishes the graphical editors, implements the rlë decoder, and makes an rlë encoder (assuming he does; I think I remember something about not bothering because EnRle can already do it, and it's very difficult), it'll be finished. More work than it sounds, though...

Indeed, given that an RLE encoder would be many times more complicated than anything present in MissionComputer at the moment, and given that EnRLE already does everything I can imagine ever wanting to do with RLEs, I see very little reason to make it one of my priorities.

David: Well, the thing is, EnRle isn't entirely reliable. But hey, it's your program, and I've never had trouble with it, so whatever. 🙂

Don't be ridiculous. Not only is SAT now unsupported by Ingemar, but SpriteWorld is infinitely better and still under active development. RLE? Hardware OpenGL support? Parallax scrolling? Translucency? It does it all - what else could you ask for?

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure the SpriteWorld used in Nova doesn't use hardware acceleration. Grrrr.....

Not supported? Try doing a Google search. And my point was that RLEs are difficult. PICTs, on the other hand...

His site has not been updated since April of last year. But I guess he did decide to work on an OS X version... I had heard he had abandoned it with the transition to X, which is why I called it unsupported. Oh well.

RLEs are beautiful once you have a good editor - PICTs are slower to load, slower to draw, larger....

SW has hardware OpenGL support in that spriteworlds are mapped as OpenGL textures and therefore hardware accelerated. It does not appear to be enabled in Nova - the programmer has to specifically add it in.

Having used SW for 5+ years, I am talking about the features of the library itself, not those that Nova supports. SW has awesome PICT and Quicktime file support, as evidenced by the import/export features of my upcoming RLE editor. Again, I don't know why, but PICTs do not appear to work well with Nova.

They sure are. Let me tell you a little story: the first tests of Nova when it was being rewritten for 16 bit sprites used flat PICT files. Nova took over 5 minutes to load on a 400MHz B&W; G3, which was a flaming hot machine at the time.

The day Matty swapped to RLEs the loadtime dropped to 5 seconds. That's why we use RLEs.
