Search for EV/O/N Plugins!

Hm. Just noticed that the results window comes up without toolbars (in IE 5.0 in Mac OS 9.2). Did you do that on purpose? I'd rather have the 'bars there, but it's no big deal either way.

Well, that is because either Microsoft sucks, or because Netscape does. 😛 As I'm sure you know, they both use different kinds of Javascript, which causes all sorts of problems. Before, I had parameters set, and the script didn't work in Netscape 4. I set it to use "default", which IE5 doesn't recognize...

I just ended up using a browser detect, and used different versions for IE and Netscape/Safari. Still, in IE, the bookmarks bar and the little bar on the left still refuse to show up, I can't find the parameter to show those. Ah, well. Everything else is there. 🙂

SpacePirate, you are probably already aware of this, but the "display=date" pages are numbered so that "page 1" contains the most recent plugs, not the oldest. I had written (in this thread's sister topic on the EVN board) that I thought the date pages would be more stable than the other sorts, but that was based on the (wrong!) assumption that the urls of pages with older plugs were unchanging. As it is, every time EVula adds new plugs to the collection, every other plug is going to be pushed down the list towards or onto a page with a higher number. Until Ambrosia's site is re-crawled, Google will then give incorrect results for every plug that moved to a new page.

Using the "date" pages is still better than using pages sorted by rating or by # of downloads, since those will change even between EVula's updates. I no longer think that it's better than using the "name" or "size" pages, though. If it seems worth the bother (and maybe it isn't), you could change your search engine to return only the pages on which the plugs are sorted alphabetically by name. At least that way it would be easier for a user to figure out why s/he got a wrong result and whether the wanted plug was on the page "before" or "after" the one returned. (Edit: Come to think of it, in practice hitting the "next >>" link would pretty much always get you to a plug that had been pushed off the page by recent submissions.)

Hey, though, the plug search page is still plenty useful just the way it is.
