Curious about what i have to do to make full lieutenant, though. Spent over year and a half in the game, have accumulated an average combat rating and have done several missions, but still no hint as to how to get promoted. **
Klingon space is best for kicking up your combat rating as their ships suck in the beginning and they have a ton of crew.

Promotions are based on a combination of combat rating and your rating with Starfleet Command. Doing a lot of Ready Room missions and kicking Klingon and Romulan butt is the key there.

I'm currently watching the infernally slow dial-up progress bar creep across my screen, but progress is good and morale is still high. Even after five (5) hours and only 60 megabytes of an unfinished download.
Sounds like this should be lots of fun, when I finally get to play it.
Also, I'm assuming that most of this download is graphics. So when the plug-in is released in its final stage, could UncleTwitchy upload a build minus the graphics so that us unfortunate dial-up souls could escape another 7-hour vigil? Sigh.. I guess a watched progress bar never moves, time to go to bed and hope Safari doesn't quit on me.

Nope, that'd be pushing it. I guess I'll wait for the final, complete and great version of SFA. Doubtless it'll be well worth the wait.
Thanks anyhow UT, and happy birthday. You are now, officially middle aged, although I probably shouldn't say that.

That's part of the plan -- doing the single download and then splitting it up much like the Polycon TC did, with the graphics being two separate downloads, one for all the shäns and one for all the images. I am still tweaking both, however, so the final release will still be quite a bit different from this alpha.
Could I request an alternative version which is just one file? Those of us with fat pipes for downloading don't always like having to download twenty different smaller files. (Edit: Err, I think you already said you'd do this, oops)
Obviously you can't put it up on the add-ons page (there's a size limit, in case anyone didn't know), but if you can host this little alpha version just fine, I assume you could do it again with the final.

There's a size limit to the Add-Ons page? Yoinks!
I have one major complaint. And that is that I keep getting to missions to planets that I can't find anywhere on the map(That is so freakin' huge!).

Heh. You will have to zoom out of the map so you can look for it.

Heh. I have and I have searched for the system name and it just gives me some empty system with a similar name.

I think it's around 5 MB. Well, that's the limit of what you can upload. Obviously Nova is larger, but it wasn't uploaded the same way the rest of us have to.

Make sure that whenever you stop by a starbase, you get a map, cuz the starbase maps are huge. The Federation Map from the Orbital Offices reveals a lot of space too.
I would suggest that this TC goes into Essential Downloads.
My main complaint is that a lot of the transport admiral missions are impossible because the destinatinos are so far away and my ship does 3 days/jump making it take a ton of time (Well beyond the time limit for the admiral transportation missions) to get there.
They probably don't increase my rank as much as the find pirate missions and stuff though...so I guess it doesn't matter.
Also, is there such thing as a Romula D7 that looks like a klingon ship? I was getting this...it was rather nasty, too.
Oh, the Cardassian ships have some sweet weaponry.

At 12.28 mb, "PolyconShips v1.0" is the largest file under "plugins" in the add-ons area. It was submitted in Oct. 2002. Three other chunks of Polycon were 10.92 mb, 10.09 mb, 9.87 mb.
I hope the file size limit hasn't changed since then -- I submitted "Cold Fusion for Nova" a while ago, and I think it came in right around that size once the ".sit" was ".hqx-ed." I know there's a substantial lag in things getting posted, and am OK with that.... but I do hope someone lets me know if my plug is rejected for size reasons.
Hey, thanks for the treat, UncleTwitchy! I can't wait to play it. (Actually, I can wait, and I have to, sadly... but it ain't easy!)

Get yourself a good engineer. Scotty, for instance.
Also, is there such thing as a Romulan D7 that looks like a klingon ship? I was getting this...it was rather nasty, too.
Yup. It was featured in "The Enterprise Incident." I think that UT added the plasma cannons tho.
I happen to know that the alpha testers are planning a "Survival Guide to SFA" site that will include tips and tricks like:
1. Don't take Transport Admiral missions that have destinations farther away than one zoom-out on your map
2. Get a good Engineer (I realize that's difficult to determine at the moment since I haven't finished writing the Engineer descriptions...)
3. Early Klingon ships are easy to destroy if you can get behind them.
4. Photon bursts are good for smoking out cloaked ships
Anyway, yes, the Romulans and Klingons had a technological exchange (seen in the third season TOS episode "Enterprise Incident" as Matrix said, in which the production crew discovered they couldn't find the Romulan ship model so they had to write a quick bit of dialogue to explain why Klingon ships were used in the effects shots), in which the Romulans got Klingon ships and Klingons got Romulan cloaking devices. The result was that Romulan ships got bigger and nastier quickly.
...Oh yeah, one more thing.
I forgot something very important in the "Read Me."
I don't want anyone distributing or posting links for downloading this alpha build or any of that nonsense at all. First sign of someone doing that and this alpha build is the last anyone but me sees of SFA.
Fool me once, shame on you... fool me twice, shame on me and f*** you to death with a bazooka...
