before I even start...yes I know there is a search feature. right now I do not have time to wade through possibly several dozen topics. ANYWAYS: where do I pick up a copy of Strata (or whatever is used most often)? Also, has anyone here ever heared of Meshwork? I think it is the least expensive 3D editor avliable. but does it make the right kind of file for ships and such? Thanks in advance for not posting garbage about the search feature.

A free version of Strata is usually found at (url="http://"http://www.evula.org/ewan/")Ewan's Lair(/url). I think it's down right now though.
That took me two searches (one for "Strata", one for "Ewan's Lair"), less than a dozen topics (the second one I looked at told me about Ewan's Lair), and less than five minutes to find with the search feature. Next time at least try, you could be surprised how quickly it might take to get your answer. Don't assume anything.

People consider Blender and Wings 3D to be good rendering and modeling programs. Try doing a search for each on Google. As well, if you have a PC, openFX might be worth a try (I actually modeled a boxy spaceship in it once, but I don't think anyone else here has really used it before, so the previous choices might be better in terms of people being able to help you).

I dunno, it's just kinda annoying that you don't have time to sift through topics, but you expect us to take time to answer your questions... We all have better things to be doing, like... like...
Um, what was the question again? Oh yeah.
Strata 3D is pretty much fine for making ships. I manage pretty well with it (but I also use the pro version at uni, but others do great stuff with just the free version. Try to find it with google if Ewan is still down. Anyhow, good luck, I gotta go find out what those things are that I could be spending my time better with.

If Strata doesn't go well with you there's always Mechanisto, which is free. It's got a good modelling system and can do some decent texturing without needing other programs. (Which is one of the more annoying flaws of Infini-D in my eyes.) Good luck!

Yeah, mechanisto is great. It was the first program I ever used to model, and it's great for teaching you some basic principals of modelling. A lot of first time modellers use strata, becase it looks more user friendly, but mechanisto is a great place to start your career. Plus there are a bunch of tutorials for it, on shipmaking.
Or a few at least. There is no substitute for practice. I don't think I made a good ship until my 25th at least. And there were a lot of aborted or half finished ones in there. My favorite fighter I ever made was in mechanisto, I'll put it on the image gallery as soon as I get my webspace sorted out.
about mechanisto, what version do you have? I just downloaded version 2.0. I also downloaded Blender 2.28 and Wings 0.98.15a. I figured I would try them all out.
In my opinion, Blender's UI was designer was drunk when he designed it. It's horrible.
mechanisto is really cool...out of those three I mentioned. is it only in classic or is there an X version out?

Yes, used it for quite a while now. Quite a few of the ships that are going to be re-uploaded to my site were made in it. Textured and rendered out in Strata of course, but mostly made in Meshworks. There is an X version out, although you will need to download and install Quesa to use the 3D preview. The download is on the Meshwork site as is a link to Quesa.

It's actually not bad once you get used to it. Once you start figuring functions out the UI works pretty well. The graphics may leave something to be desired but I think it was done the way it is so that it would remain cross-platform with a minimum of fuss.
