[EVN] Wiggling Ships

Anyone else notice that shäns of inertialess ships with more than 36 frames have a tendency to wiggle as they approach spöbs, shifting continuously back and forth between two frames? Anyone know of a way to fix it? I've seen this happening with shäns of both 48 and 72 frames.

I think it's just a matter of trying to keep a steady course. Inertial ships don't have this problem because the direction they're facing is not necessarily the direction they're going. The more frames, the likelier that an inertialess ship will flicker between two frames as it tries to go where it wants.

That's kinda what I was thinking -- and what I was afraid of. It looks silly, and yet there doesn't seem to be anything I can do about it.

Unless you're satisfied with all inertialess ships having only 36 frames. Probably the more frames you make, the less noticeable the wiggle will be. This will, unfortunately, increase the side of the graphic, and probably make it harder for older computers to handle.

It should only really be an issue with slower ships, shouldn't it? The faster one's would seem smoother, only needing the usual 36 frames...

I assume, I could be dead wrong.

Even big ships, though -- say, upwards of 300x240 pixels or so -- require more than your standard 36, unless their turn rating is so ridiculously high as to be unbelieveable.

(edit) And in my case, Star Trek ships aren't known for quick turn ratings -- we're talking slow and graceful, not the Millenium Falcon here. (/edit)

Hey! What are you implying? That Solo's Falcon, the fastest hunk of junk in the Galaxy, isn't graceful?

What about the time Solo escaped Vader's fleet by hiding among the thrash? Even Leia thought that was graceful.

Agile? Yes. Graceful? No. But it is speedy and maneuverable and could run rings around the Enterprise and so 36 frames would be fine...

It's also smaller than the Enterprise, so I don't think it's all that relevant ;). In any case, adding more frames should help make it less noticeable, although more likely. It's a trade-off, so you'll just have to figure out what you like best.

Here's a response probably nobody saw coming: Is the wiggle noticeable enough to get a laugh?

I'm working on a plug that involves a ship that looks like a giant clown's head, and had been musing on ways to make the head shake back and forth at times. UncleTwitchy's wiggle may save me from having to animate the sprite.

(My plug may also have "clownlet" fighters that launch with a Three Stooges sound effect and shudder back and forth. This could work if the "unfolding ship" flag in the shan plays animations for fighters when they are launched -- but does it?)

Obviously, looking silly is more a plus than a negative with a loony plug like mine....
