For my Firefly mod, I'm attempting to replace the main menu. I've gotten the background altered, and I think I've got a handle on the colr resource.
However, when I tried replacing one of the button graphics with my own, the game crashed. (I have not yet replaced the button mask----could this be the cause?) My button is a different size as well....do main menu buttons have to be a particular size?

I'm fairly sure they'd have to be the same size... Uh, if you get really stuck, try Anubis, he altered the interface for Polycon.

Oh, and I just realized that I should clarify: Technically the new graphics aren't mine. But I have permission to use them.
Also, if you are moving things around, there is a resource that you need to change. I think its the intf or colr... It can be found in one of the Nova Data files though. One of the graphics ones i think...
Exactly -- the masks have to match up with the graphics and you have to change the cΓΆlr interface to reflect where you place your new graphics.
For instance, in the (url="http://"http://homepage.macomb.com/~sirchuck/screenshots/Main_Menu.jpg")SFA Main Menu,(/url) I have the control panels of the helm and navigational console serve as the various buttons, with the rollover logo giving you the function of each where the logo there is.
Unfortunately, the "logo" graphic is cycled randomly (for the flames of the Nova logo, no doubt), so even though I have a PICT of that planet rotating and the lights below it flashing in sequence, it just flutters spastically.

Maybe you could make it a station, instead of a planet, and have the animation as lights on the station going on and off seemingly randomly... that'd look kinda cool, and take up a lot of your free time to do.

I don't know why I didn't think of that. That ties in with the opening of the game, where you're parked in Earth orbit near the big Spacedock station. That's bloody brilliant.
Anyway, I didn't mean to hijack the topic with shameless self-promotion, but thanks for the encouragement. It's coming along quite nicely, and it looks like the next alpha build might even qualify as a beta.
Getting back to the topic at hand, Lindley, did you figure out your problem? One other thing I learned was that you need a minimum of two frames for the buttons in addition to having a mask for them -- and you'll also have to deal with the sliding animation graphics, which can also be something of a pain (my solution was making them a couple of single black pixels in the upper left corner).
Haven't had time to test that solution yet, but I'm going to.
