I have looked in the EV Nova Bible but have not found out how to set a weapon's explosion sound. could someone please tell me how to set it?

Welcome to the Developer's Corner web board.
I dont know what a wepon is, but there are two types of sounds associated with weapons. The first sound is the one heard when the weapon is fired. Strangely enough it is specified with the Sound parameter of the wëap resource, where you can provide an index number (not an RID) from 0 through 63. The sound itself is contained in a snd resource. In the Nova scenario there are 36 snd resources to choose from with resource ID numbers (RIDs) from 200 through 235. They are located in the Nova Files folder in the Nova Sounds data file. If you want to add your own snd resources you can use any of the free RIDs 236 through 263.
The second sound associated with a weapon is the explosion that occurs when the shot hits something. This explosion sound is specified with the ExplodType parameter of the wëap resource, where you provide a another index number (again, not an RID) from 0 through 63. The difference is that the ExplodType index number references a bööm resource which in turn points not only to the explosion sound but the explosion graphic as well. The bööm resource SoundIndex parameter once again specifies a snd resource to be used for the explosiion.
If you look at virtually any of the Nova scenario wëap , bööm , and snd resource data files in the Nova Files folder, youll find a multitude of examples.

something that irritated me about that, i can change the sound, don't get me wrong, but the button that says play sound, does not work. i have no clue what i am setting it to unless i go through a series of: buy missles, shoot them, see which one i like, find it on Res Edit, put its sound under what i want it to be.
p.s. it does not work for NOVAOne either.

I assume you're referring to the bööm resource? In that case, both the bööm resource AND the snd resource have to be in the same plug for the "Play" button to function.
ps.- In the English language the first letter of the first word of a sentence is capitalized. This convention greatly aids both perception and comprehension.

Dude, it's just a letter. Have you ever read painless' posts? Nobody picks on her English. Stop being so picky about how people post.
------------------ And there's more where that came from!
no, i'm not refering to boom, i am talking about the sound button in the weap resource. its on the bottem right of any weapon window. ya click it (even with every single Nova data resource open, even the tiles) and it still does nothing. and yes, i do have my volume on, and i honastly don't care how i capitalize my sentances. i am a bit more surprised you choose to attack me, instead of the other 8000 members of the post.
p.s. i know there are much more then 8000 members here, i was just estimating how many of them probly to not pay close attention to their capitalization.

The same answer applies to the wëap resource. Both the wëap resource and the snd resource need to be in the same plug for the "Play" button to function there as well.
(edit)Clarification: Having all of the resource files open is not the same thing as having both the wëap and snd resources in the same plug file. Try this: copy any weapon and its associated sound into a blank plug. Now the "Play" button works.(/edit)
ps.- I was not attacking anyone or trying to be picky. Just offering some friendly advice that obviously was unwanted. Sorry if anyone is offended by my offer.

P.S. - In the English language, "P.S." is an abbreviation for "Post Script", and is therefore capitalized and separated with periods. This convention greatly aids both perception and comprehension.
P.P.S. - Get over it.
