This news is a week old, but I just heard it today and it looks like it hasn't been posted here yet so I thought I'd pass it along. I imagine it will be hard on the rest of the plugin developers community, seeing as Bryce is the preferred tool for landing pic. creation right now. Now it looks like newcomers will have to use MojoWorld, Vue, or a more expensive professional app instead. I must say I'm very disappointed in Corel right now.
------------------ (/mindless babble)
Actually, I posted a topic about it on just tech, but no biggie. Newcomers ould always buy it used on eBay. That's how I got my first copy of Bryce 4. The problem is that we won't be able to upgrade to Bryce 6.

One landscaping program that has ENORMOUS potential is terragen though... it costs 70 bucks only!

C'est le vie
I never really liked Bryce that much anyway, so its no big deal for me. Mojo World is a far better program for landscapes anyway, and Terragen is pretty good too (once it hits version 1.0 and includes rocks and trees it will be a lot better). For me Bryce always offered too little in an unatractive shell - I really hated that interface

Damn.
Oh well, Mojo looks like a suitable alternative. And if it comes to the worst, I think I still have an old bug-ridden Bryce 2 beta lying around somewhere.
I'll worry about it when I get to rendering landscapes again (=not anytime soon).
But it still sucks.

Bryce is a cursed name in the ATMOS Software BoofHead? Office. We have a love/hate relationship with it. While it produces great stuff if tweaked properly, it has the following major flaws:
The file sizes are stupidly large. Other comparable model/texture sets are two orders of magnitude smaller
The program is hideously unstable, even under Mac OS X
The directional translation tools are both imprecise and hard to use
The program demonstratably causes file system corruption
Bryce doesn't play well with any of the professional 3D/2D tools we have
Rendering is glacial even on the best of hardware
That's just a few off the top of my head. Between you, me and the gatepost, we'll be dropping Bryce as a tool for any future projects. It's simply too crap to rely upon.
all the best,
Dave @ ATMOS

IMHO:
Bryce > Infini-D > ... > Cararra > 3DS Max > Lightwave > Maya
Or something like that. I dislike Bryce mainly 'cause primitives look awful and that's the only thing I could ever get to work :p. But Infini-D did some OK renders for EVC/O, so I say it's better. Not that I'm really speaking out of knowledge...

That's pretty much right, but I'll pop RenderMan and it's artist tools up there with Maya, if not a little bit ahead.
Bryce gets done what I need to get done with minimal headaches, and thus it's my prefered modeler. I'm very disappointed.

Hmmm, with Bryce going out the door for Mac then, that means more MojoWorld. A far superior program from what I can tell.

pipeline: you said you have problems with bryce under osx; "The program demonstratably causes file system corruption"...maybe its just me, but it works great for me. i just use it to render landing pics and i also find it very useful for making planets. make a sphere, give it a texture, make another slightly larger sphere around that one and give it. matbe, a cloud texture and you have yourself a great looking planet, IMO.
bryce no longer on the mac...well...this version gives me no problems and it does what i want. the file sizes are no problem for me. once i'm done with the rendering and get the pic how i want in my plugin, i trash the file...actually i never even save the models. i just save a pic and trash it once i resize it or cut/paste in photoshop.
hopefully i get into ship making sometime soon, but i'm not sure how exactly to do that in bryce. i need a quick simple app to do that. bryce is great for what i do, but too many buttons i'm unsure of how they work. if someone could suggest a simple easy to learn app that i could learn, great. i used to make ships for EVO in infini-d, but i lost my infini-d cd, so i'll need to relocate that...

We used it in a prodution environment 5 or 6 hours straight, day in day out for 4 years. It gave us nothing but grief, on 6 different machines.
Originally posted by Vaumnou: That's a shame, Bryce wasn't too bad a program too use from the short experience I had with it. But from what I can see there are far more far better alternatives, Such as Mojoworld and Terragen and the middle of the range modelling apps for a few hundred.

I don't like how you've rated them, unless you've used them all to some extent. From what I can gather it's more Max and Lightwave on top with Maya just behind(For it's poor interface and difficulty to use) with something of a large gap to Carrara, Infini-D and any others and a little bit further down would be Bryce.
As far as I can tell it's almost impossible to rate the programs, you can put them in sections but they all seem to have their ups and downs.

Pfff. Infini-D ownz Carrara. It might be the "Infini-D of the newer age", but I greatly dislike it compared to its older brother.

Well, IMHO, Carrara is better (it is supposed to replace Infini-D anyway). Carrara: (list=a) ()Can import Infini-D files. ()Has a simple, easy to use interface. ()Can do global illumination and caustics. ()Can import Wings3D models.(/list=a)
I use Wings3D for modeling, and Carrara for arranging and rendering. Using GI on a render can make just about anything look photorealistic. Once rendering programs hit photorealism, their "quality" flattens out somewhat. It's pretty arbitrary which photorealistic render is better than another. I think 3DS Max etc. are better mainly because they have much better volumetric effects/particle effects/whatever than Carrara. It's meaningless to say that a 3DS Max primitive is better than a Carrara primitive, so I think they're probably about equal in that regard.

Now I can tell you that lightwave and Max are definately behind Maya in power and ranking. I love lightwave's interface, but it is too far behind maya to be concidered an equal product, especially in the realm of character modeling and animation. Maya has a relitively good interface, it is actually quaite accessible. Furthermore its built-in support for hair, cloth, fluids, and most importantly paint tools (as well as a host of others) makes it by far more powerful than the other two (in my oppinion, max just sucks). Now I havent palyed enough with PRM and the other pixar products to comment on them, but the latest vers of maya does have a production renderer (mental ray) built in, and is quite effective. Anyway, i am now a Maya junky, and have not used LW in quite a while. They are really going to have to make some big steps with 8 to make me upgrade.
But on topic, I would be happy if bryce just permenently died out, i have no love for it, at all. I think terragen shows the most promise, but landscape modelers dont really intrest me any more, as they dont really hold any advantage over all-in-one packages like lightwave and maya.
Joe
P.S. Does anyone have a list of changes that are going to be implemented in LW 8, I scanned newtek's forums a while back, but i really didn't see anything. Thaks.

Hmmm... Maybe I shouldn't have put my two cents in...
From that I was going off what I had heard on a few other forums, but then again most of these would be lightwave forums :D. I know lightwave does have animation tools for cloth etc. but I belive they're pretty hard to use. I also know that Maya's character modelling is much better but the rest of it was lagging slightly. Maybe I was wrong, I might look into downloading the demo.
