EDIT: THIS IS AN OLD THREAD. ONLY THE LATTER BITS ARE ANYWHERE NEAR CURRENT
This past weekend, after a few months of procrastination and dumbness, I managed to get a pilot file editor working. This first version doesn't allow you to edit all the aspects of the pilot file; instead, it focuses only on "ship attributes" such as ship name, ship type, outfits, weapons, fighters, and escorts present.
I plan on adding the ability to edit "universe attributes" in the second version (last stellar visited, exploration state of systs, etc), but I'd like feedback on what I've got. If all goes well, the final version (version 3) will allow you to edit everything but active mission information.
It should work for both EV and EVO pilot files (though I've only tested it for EVO pilot files). The only drawback is that I used AppleScript in making the app (sorry). It may only work under OS9. Anyway, that's why I'd like feedback.
People can download it from (url="http://"http://phair.csh.rit.edu/~seant/EV/PFEv1.sit.hqx")http://phair.csh.rit...V/PFEv1.sit.hqx(/url)
Enjoy.

I get a file not found error when clink on the link.
Edit- The link might be this (url="http://"http://phair.csh.rit.edu/~seant/EV/PFE/PFEv3.0.sit.hqx")http://phair.csh.rit...PFEv3.0.sit.hqx(/url) -Edit-Edit- Nevermind that is the evo version. there is nothing there that has that in it.
Why would Applescript make it not work in OS X?

I downloaded the link cdrcoyote posted and it does not work natively in X because it is a Classic Application. But it did run in Classic. I do not have an EV or EVO pilot file to test with, so I don't know if it fully works though.

It works flawlessly under the classic environment in OS X. You forgot about the big PICT work around though, so outfits after 227 don't have any pictures, and some of them use the small outfit PICTs. And just a heads-up, proper plain text files are supposed to use line breaks (returns) instead of leaving it up to the software to wrap the text. (Next time I'd recommend HTML - far more flexible and universally readable than any other format. Ever. PDF and RTF files are also acceptable.)

It would be better if it was for Nova, so I could test my TC with greater ease. I have no need for an EV/O pilot editor, and there are already some others out there.

Well, yeah, but the encryption for EV/O pilots has already been cracked. Unless something has happened recently, the EVN ecryption hasn't been broken. This means therefore that only EV/O pilots can currently be edited.

I know. I'm just hoping to prod some people into breaking it sooner ;).
hmmmmmmm its all so interesting....
Wow. I started this thread back in 2000. It only took 3 years to get it's first responce. Pretty good....

EVN encryption has been broken, but I'm unwilling to release the details as I don't want peoplpe to cheat. Besides, the encryption is only part of the puzzle. One must understand the file structure of the pilot file. Right now I fell confident that I know 90% of the structure; some is still a mystery.
I'm willing to cook up a modified EVN pilot to prove it's been done (for bragging rights and to prove it's been done). The trick would be for people to figure out whether the pilot was modifed through editing or plugins.

Heh, I didn't even notice the post date. Probably should've looked. Though I do feel marginally better knowing that 4 other people didn't notice either.

Wow... Really should've noticed that... Even more surprising is the fact that the link was still active...

Wow.... I clearly didn't notice either.
But...why did you mention that it only works in OS 9 in your post? Mac OS X wasn't released until March 24, 2001. Were you talking about OS 8 support?

Yes.
I will like to see the pilot file./

A modified nova pilot file you mean? Sure. Tell me what criteria it should have and I'll set it up. I'll have to hand edit it as I haven't made a nova editor (even for my own use), but no prob.
Come up with some pilot characteristics that can't be done via plugins and I'll cook up an example.
How about a pilot with 6 hired Leviathan escorts and 2,000cr cash? And at the same time the pilot has accepted 10 ordinary "random cargo" missions to Earth? (random cargo missions NEVER end with Earth) And finally, the pilot is "landed" on a wormhole or hypergate. Wait... come to think of it, all of those are possible with plugins. Hrmm...

You see why I don't think there is a burning need for a pilot editor; an editor might make plug making easier, but it'd be too easy to cheat. Still, a mission editor might be nice. Something that gives the user the ability to set or clear mission bits.
