Infini-D's render engine is looking old compared to some stuff ive seen out there....

Yeah, I need to get Lightwave sometime. Probably in a couple of years. That discount looks tasty :).

Exactly how pray tell? Piracy doesnt count.
Why do so many people want lightwave?
It's like getting your first car, and running around saying "Why can't I get a formula 1 mummy?"
Answer: "Cause you don't need that kinda power son..."
Really no one should be buying lightwave (unless on student discount) unless they're already good at modelling and they are going to make $$$ out of it.
Don't you think so?

Because Lightwave is one of the most powerful modelers on the market. It ranks with Maya, SoftImage/XSI, and 3DStudioMax as the industry standard programs.

Dude, Lightwave is so cool. I just got it about two weeks ago, I'm still on the tutorials, but it's paying off. Just the Bevel tool beats Strata over the head and sends it out the window. The Bandsaw is cool, the tab key surface conversion is one of the most awsome things I've ever seen in a 3D app (I forget what it's actually called). And considering that I've been working with Strata for all my life, I know what I'm talking about. I could go on and on about how cool Lightwave is, but I won't, let's just say that many of the character models INCLUDING (url="http://"http://www.warcraftiii.net/screenshots/cinematic/cinematic-026.jpg")Prince Arthas(/url) were modeled in Lightwave (Warcraft III).
Hope you liked my rant... As you have noticed, anybody who uses Lightwave will testify under truth drugs and torture that it's an extremley awsome program.

Like Spoonman, I spent a long time with Strata. Switching to Lightwave was so cool. I loved all the new capabililities I had (apparently, it took away my spelling....)
BUT... it has a steep learning curve, I wouldn't reccommend it unless you have moderate experience already with another program. Have you tried the demo?

I would love to try it, but last time I checked you had to get it sent to you (no download), and they never sent it to me (I assume because Im overseas) :frown:
Im thinking about getting Lightwave as my next 3D software purchase. Either that or Strata Pro... I would like to continue with Strata, but its more expensive (educational deals), and Lightwave is more powerful and hence a better investment.

Too bad, I'm hoping to turn out some ships soon, in the next month or so, you'll be seeing them in the image gallery I hope. They'll probably be pretty weak compared to what sparky, matrix, and Weep can do, but whatever, practice makes perfect...
Cool, cant wait to see them! Hows it going with the Swan?

Really good demo. It's what I'm using right now to decide if I want to buy it.

Urm - Mac... Most developers on this board (me included) use Macs. Posting a link to a PC version of the demo isnt really useful Thanks anyway!
Infini-D's render engine is indeed old, but you can get some great results if you render your stuff at around twice the size of what you want then shrink it down. A longer proccess, but it works.
Somebody needs to give me a copy of Lightwave though... /drools. I'm lucky if I make $5 a week.

Questionable, Lightwave did some odd stuff with mesh, I managed to fix the settings so it imports properly. Textured it, added the cockpit, just setting up the scene now. It's interesting the way the texture mapping in Lightwave works, I don't like it as much as Strata (which is very straitforward), perhaps it just takes some getting used to.

You gotta do something about that cashflow. Here's a secret, try making more money...
The problem with the demo is that it only allows 400 points per layer, it renders with a checkerboard, it won't import anything, and you can't save scenes. (this could just be the discovery edition, but I think that's the same things as the demo)

I could send you the 3ds file that was exported from Wings. I re-exported it in Strata to DFX as thats what you asked for Might help... I like the Strata texturing engine in some ways, it is very simple. I prefer the one that Pro has though it has a lot more options!
