I've noticed that the AI for EV Nova seems to have a few unusual and unnecessary quirks that make it a lot less effective in combat. The chief one among them is that whenever an AI ship is hit by a weapon with impact it has to turn, come to a stop and turn back again to what it was doing, all usually under heavy fire. Now I know that the AI has limitations, but surely it's intelligent enough to handle small speed and course corrections more naturally while it's flying...

You have to remember that for stand-off enabled warships, the ship will try to stay as far away from its enemy as it can, while still remaining in its own weapons range. So what you'll often see is the ship turning around, accelerating under full thrust until it's quite at least a screenwidth away from its enemy, and then turn BACK around and open fire. Of course, if it's a Fed Heavy Missile Variant Destroyer trying to get away from a Rebel Class E Starbridge, it's kinda pointless.
------------------ Suddenly, the little scoutship disappeared and then reappeared right behind the alien warfleet. The gravitic ship's captain hailed the armada. "You are going to be destroyed, but I will give you a choice as to how you want to spend eternity: big pieces, little pieces, or quarks?" Dead silence. "Quarks it is, then."
It's been my experience that stand-off attackers do not run away when you approach. Actually, it's whenever (and I quote Matt Burch) "some outside force causes their velocity to exceed their 'sit still' threshold, they will switch to their 'cancel velocity by firing engines' behavior". Basically, if a big weapon (or many small weapons) smack into them with enough combined impact to get them moving fast enough, they'll readjust to maintain their stable firing position.
