Well, Im not exactly sure how to do it with Infini-D, but the way I do it for Strata is just take the glow spin that you already have and in an application like photoshop (I use fireworks) just select all the black areas with whatever appropriate tool your app has and copy all the mask out.
I originally thought that the glow mask uses transparency but it doesnt so just mask the glow the way you do it for the rest of the ship

Make your glows in sprites, then go into a program like photoshop, use the magic wand tool on the black, invert the selection (so all the glows are selected instead of the negative space), and press delete. Even though I was using POV-Ray to make my glows, they all went through a lot of processing after I had rendered them, including blurring them and stuff, so new masks had to be made, and I haven't had any problems with the technique that I just gave.

Aye, it's pretty tough to get a decent glow out of Infini-D using standard lighting. Weepul showed me a technique a few months ago for creating awesome flame effects using circular-positioned objects and transparent / alpha masking textures ((url="http://"http://dreamwave.evula.net/FirebatLarge.jpg")example(/url)). I've been able to tweek it by a long shot since I first started using it, and even though the actual set-up for this technique is not a true light, you can place a spotlight inside of the flame objects to give it the illusion that it really is light. Maybe I can e-mail you an Infini-D file with the flame along with the textures used - once you check it out it should be easy to adopt it to your liking.

I think what he was meaning was creating a mask for NOVA ships, and how to mask the glow for the spin files. Care to elaborate Divals?

Yeah, I'll check those out.
Ah, I gotcha now - looks quite easy. just make an exact render of your ship with it completely black so only the engine flames show. I guess what I'm confused about is how to actually put the sprites into a format that Nova can recognize.
