Though I'm not 100% sure or not, I am considering buying either an Apple XServe or the Apple RAID and starting up web space for purchase (actually, my dad want's to do this so he can make money but I brought it up to him)...anyway, how I was just wondering how many people would be intrested in buying web space?

Dude, face it... EVula has stolen the market around here. But do try - the EV community isn't the only place you could provide hosting.

 You're just going to up and buy one?
You've got oodles and oodles of money laying around. I feel that I should direct you (url="http://"http://www.evula.com/support/")here.(/url)
Anyway, yeah, the hosting market is pretty much covered around here; (url="http://"http://www.evula.org/")evula.org(/url) has the general hosting covered, (url="http://"http://www.evula.net/")evula.net(/url) has most of the "service" sites hosted (for example, the (url="http://"http://ucplugs.evula.net/")Upcoming Plugin Directory(/url)), (url="http://"http://www.sourcecod.com/")Sourcecod(/url) has the higher-end covered, and misc other hosts (like (url="http://"http://www.northernswamp.com/")Northern Swamp(/url)) have some users, too.

Atleast I get a mention... Basicaly, if you want to talk about mac servers, I'm one of the few around here who opperates one. If you wish to talk to me in depth you can eMail me, or send me a AIM message...
For the server, I dont know. Depends on how much money you have, what conection, and so forth. Need way more details. though if you had money for T1 (512K/Sec or better) and a X Server, I'd go with the normal one. then after a while if you have a lot of business I'd go with the Raid as another one. Rember it takes months before you will start reciving large amounts of business. In the last month I've gotten tripple business because I'm been around for over 6 Months. Web hosting is not a Cheap business, because you have to pay for everything, and hope people will choose you over other well established companys.
I started on a eMac as my first server, now I've upgraded to a G4 1 GHz Tower, and am looking at a Raid within the next 6 Months if things keep up.
I'd suggest desgining the site first, making it very complete, and such, then look at conection prices, after that if your still intrested, buy your self a powerful yet cheaper server, and see how things go, Rember Upgrading at a later point can be easy or a painful experance. Its better to start small then grow rather than start big and loose money for months on end.
I'd suggest talking to me more. Its hard to talk about this unless there is more details and some questions.
Hope to hear from you, Jager

Ok--here's the scoop.
See, my dad want's to start makin' money (as does everyone...) and I told him that people actually pay good money for a fast, reliable service (that is, people around the EV foras, gaming clans (which is probably gonna be out biggest market) and others). So, all last week we looked around the net, comparing prices and services, seeing what people had to offer and for what price. So, I think we have a pretty good idea of what to do.
And yes, we kinda do have the money to fund this operation. We will probably get 1M/1M DSL line, work it out of our G4 Duel processor running Jag. and the OSX Server soft.
IF we make money we will get an Xserve.
Well, I wont be requiring any space (Ive actually got more than I really need - at the moment), but I have some ideas.
For a start, I would recommend checking the prices around so that you have a good very competative rate. You seem to have that covered anyway though.
I would also go round local businesses and telling them about your service, and how your service could be better than their existing providers. Perhaps offer them an introductory offer of free web design if they sign up within the first 6 weeks or something? If you can do web design (which from your sig I see you can), this could be a real turning point for them. Also with your service I would recommend having a web design service so that they dont have to bether going elsewhere for it.
Good luck ewan

Check with the company, most dont allow Web Servers except on more expensive line. WHo's the provider, what state/provence...
DSL seems too slow for hosting.

It usually is, but then again, if you don't host all too many sites and have a really fast DSL connection, it might work.

Is there a difference between DSL and Cable, I mean speed wise?

There isn't a black and white comparison there, it all depends on the provider. However, neither of those connections is "acceptable" for a host, in my opinion; connection speeds will plummet like a boulder once multiple hit the server at a time, especially since some broadband providers have instituted an upload cap to prevent servers from being run off of them without the ISP's permission (which usually involves a much more expensive service).
