I'm slowly starting to craft the OpenEV scenario, the galaxy that one will play in when (url="http://"http://openevgalaxy.sourceforge.net/")OpenEV(/url) is finished. It can be thought of in most respects as another total conversion, but in reality it will be for a different game. Being massively multiplayer, things like storylines will not be included. So I'm at the point of formulating governments and their ships. Keep in mind clans will be a part of OpenEV, so one goal is to create governments that cater to different kinds of clans. My ideas so far are: 1. Humans Homeworld: Earth, or a similar planet Species: human Ship strengths: versatility Typical special ships: ? Appropriate subgroups/clans: traders 2. Spartans Homeworld: makes life plentiful and cheap Species: carnivorous Ship strengths: firepower Typical special ships: gunboats, heavy cruisers Appropriate subgroups/clans: pirates 3. Ornithos Homeworld: thick atmosphere, cliffs Species: avian Ship strengths: speed, range Typical special ships: scout ships, interceptors Appropriate subgroups/clans: scattered remote outposts 4. Tortucans Homeworld: harsh, rocky Species: reptilian Ship strengths: armor Typical special ships: heavy freighter Appropriate subgroups/clans: mining 5. Pluribus Homeworld: ocean world? Species: live in huge colonies Ship strengths: numbers Typical special ships: carriers Appropriate subgroups/clans: convoys 6. Celarens Homeworld: small, dark ice world, or a gas giant Species: something weird, such as amobealike blobs Ship strengths: cloak, jamming Typical special ships: Appropriate subgroups/clans: none, may be better as an unjoinable government
I'm looking for input as to whether this setup would work well, given the slight differences between EV and OpenEV. In particular, I'd like some better government names. Their characteristics, however, I like, and have already thought up ships for each.

Very interesting... Multiplayer EV...
This is one of the few things that people have been constantly asking for ever since I joined this community and probably long before as well.
As for feedback, did you just want some cool names for the governments? A multiplayer scenario opens up a whole different world for how you go about designing a plug-in. I'm really not sure off the top of my head what I'd advise...
I'll let you know if I think of anything, and if you want I could probably rattle off some government names for you.

I actually like the government names you have because if you happen to know the latin roots of the words you are rewarded with knowing the strengths and characteristics of that government. I do not like Pluribus as much though because even though its characteristics are perfect, it just doesn't sound like a government. I can't think of any other latin words that mean "many" or "plentiful" off the top of my head though

21st Century Digital Boy: yeah, I'm basically looking for better names for some governments, or entirely new government ideas, along with anything else I'm overlooking for populating a galaxy. You're absolutely right that a multiplayer game has different characteristics, so if there are differences I'm overlooking there, point them out too. AriosSW: I too like Orinthos, Tortucans, and Celarens. Humans is a no-brainer, but Pluribus and Spartans could be improved. I'm thinking the Pluribus will be fish-like, and the Spartans will be generic bloodthirsty carnivores. My ideas for ship names: Spartans: Claw, Prowler, Mandible, Pouncer, Incisor, Constrictor, Stalker Orinthos: Gosling, Vulture, Pelican, Raptor, Phoenix Tortucan: S-cargo ( ), Kameal, Tyranno, Croc, Ankylo Pluribus: Guppy, Prawn, Calamar, Minnow other governments: I dunno yet Basically, I'm thinking the ships will be anthropomorphic. It's easy to tell what shape I'd use for an Incisor, or what special ability a Kameal would have. Is this too blatant an allusion? How do people feel about flying ships mostly inspired by animals?
Piscene?
I think you should call the humans Terrans.

As for conceptual ideas, how about having certian random things that happen periodically regardless of any player interaction. Also, if you're going to have people design thier own ships, you definately need something to prevent everyone from making a super-ship. Prehaps as the pilot's experience goes up, they're more limited as to what they can fly? Prehaps that would make it more challenging for veterans? There would have to be some floor on it, though, so people didn't end up flying Kraits...
For upgrading veteran's ships: the amount of high-tech things they can buy is far greater than when they started, but it is insidiously expensive. And for what they can buy as the go on: have it linked to their combat rating, or skill level, or whatever.

I first thought Humans was just as good as Terrans, but Terrans is more in keeping with the other government names. Piscene makes sense, but it's not as fluid and 'vowely' as I'd like for an aquatic race. So I'm still thinking. 21st Century Digital Boy, could you give the etymologies of those names you gave? The idea to prevent überships is first of all not letting people design their own ships to an unlimited degree. We're thinking there will be a library of ship designs, outfits, etc. that players can choose from. This also means one won't have to constantly encounter and download new sprites/models. We're also debating detriments like acceleration, and the fuel required to jump, being proportional to the mass of your ship and its outfits. For more detail, see the link to the forums in my sig.

What about two names for each alien race -- the name they call themselves and the etymologically-based-on-Latin names that Humans/Terrans refer to them? That way you can have names that make sense and names that are aesthetically pleasing to you.

I really can't give etymologies for the names I gave, as I pretty much randomly thought them up on the spot. I literally typed random letters, spelled words backwards, or mix-matched syllables from different words and then fiddled around with them until they sounded cool.
Given the nature of the Spartan people I don't think Spartan is a very good name for pirates.
------------------ Pinky, Are you pondering what I am pondering? I think so, Brain, but if they called them sad meals, kids wouldn't buy them.
Allow me to reiterate: the Spartans are not all pirates. Their society and culture, however, would support a faction that liked pirating. In OpenEV (to my mind) there will be large governments that control sectors of the galaxy, but each government will have a number of clans made up of real players. It's safe to say enough people will like pirating that they'll want to form a clan, and the Spartans are an appropriate government to 'sponsor' pirating. However, I would kind of like to find another name for the whole people than "Spartans."
