I must be one of the more lazy people in the world. I am interested in possibly turning some ideas for ships into models, but I do not wish to (or have the time to) spend several weeks getting used to a new modeling program. My only experience with 3D modelers is the now defunct AutoDesk Rhinoceros CAD/modeling program. Does anyone here know of a 3D program with a UI like Rhino for Mac?

I don't have a direct response to your question. However, after downloading many 3d software demo's I found one that was really easy for me to use, and produces really quality renders. Far good enough for Nova. It's called Maxon: Cinema 4d Go!. There is a 30 day demo available. I have never modeled before in my life and within 2 weeks put together two ships that I think look pretty darn good considering. The first one I modeled can be seen (url="http://"http://www.polytone.net/new_axiom/development_showcase.html")here(/url) and the other is available (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/webboard/Forum9/HTML/003532.html")here(/url). I don't usually promote products like this, but I have been really happy with the program and it's ease of use. After probably 5 or 6 trials of different programs, Go! really stood out from the first time I booted it. Quick and clean. Anyway, sorry I couldn't answer your question directly, but I hope I've helped in some way...

I only found the Cinema 4d R8 demo, even with searching the usual suspects (VersionTracker, Cnet). Where else might I try looking for Cinema 4d Go!?
Strata 3D base, is free and wonderful.

If anything, I would try looking at google.com or something as well, Chuckles. And if you still can't find it, I think I may have a copy of the demo somewhere on my hardrive (it's hard to remember, when you have a 120 gig HD on your computer). Also, I havn't seen too much on the app "Wings 3D", but I've heard good things about it from windows users. I know there is a mac version of Wings 3D, but I'm not sure how good it is (or if it's even functioning yet). I also think I still have a copy of Strata 3.0.2... So, whatever you need, just contact me, and I'll see what I can do.

That is crazy. It is gone! I searched the Maxon website and there is nothing there. I'm really sorry I got your hopes up. It is a fairly new product...That's really wierd. Again, sorry all I found was the Cinema 4d R8 demo too. I sent Maxon an email asking where it went. I'll get back to you if I learn anything of relevance. Good luck.
I've made some fair stuff with Mechanisto. It's really easy to use, but isn't like Rhino. (which I've used too) Unfortunatly, Mechanisto doesn't easily produce such results as polystatic got. I can't figure out those textures or bump maps.

polystatic: I must say I do like the interface of Cinema 3d R8 though. I was able to do ellipsoidal wing shape in about 30 minutes of screwing around with it. Good direction to point me. Now, if I could only cough up the $200 for something that is going to be used very infrequently. Hmmm.
Meaker IV: The thing I hated about Rhino was its inability to do halfway decent textures. I generally got around it by making billions of objects, and then watching the computer choke when it tried to render. Good times. Sadly the only thing that remains of my work in high school is this: Its a pilot-type view from the the "seat". Took me almost a full semester to do the plane.

Yeah, I've noticed that Rhino doesn't have much for rendering capabilities. I think it even says in the tutorial that designs should be sent to another rendering program to get the results desired. Mechanisto renders pretty well for freeware.
I'd think you would know by now ewan, your the one who taught this to me, its not the graphic software, its the modler.. Please tell me how I can, owning several expensive 3D aps, still prefer the cut down piece of crap?
No thats not a flame, if it wasnt for this guy, I would of given up already

Learned well you have grasshopper...
It is true to a point. But when comparing two similar versions of the same program, it is allowed to say that base is completely useless The free version of 3.0.2 was far superior, giving the user way more options to play with. Base was like a cut down version of Plus and Pro, but also a cut down version of the old free version n(that both you and I use). Some of the options that are prertty much necessary in the old free version (for example the expert mode in the texture editor) were cut out of the 3.5 base version. It was an icky and bad move by Strata.
Still, thanks for makeing me feel all warm and gooey inside

If you don't mind watermarked images, download Maya Personal Learning Edition. It is a free version of Maya Complete. It has many capabilities beyond most mid level 3D programs. I have Strata 3Dplus 3.5, but I rarely use it anymore in favor of Maya PLE. Use the link below. (url="http://"http://www.aliaswavefront.com")www.aliaswavefront.com(/url)
