Okay, don't ask why I suddenly thought of this - I don't know myself. I have a vague memory of many years ago seeing a plugin being developed for (I think) EVO. This plug turned EVO into an RPG. It turned the ships into characters (people, monsters, etc), I think it used credits for experience, that sort of thing.
There was a website which had some screenshots, but as far as I could ever make out the whole thing came to nothing.
So, since this memory has decided to resurface in my head, I have a question. Is anyone planning anything similar in Nova? And can anyone else remember this plug, or am I just making it up?

That sounds kind of interesting. Using the new sprite system, you might actually be able to get a reasonable approximation of walking--but it would be surprisingly large.
As for experience, EVN already has a system that gives you points based on what you kill. What was it again? Oh, yeah, combat rating. Leveling could be handled with auto-aborting missions that were available 100% of the time everywhere after you reached a certain combat rating. These would give you an outfit (think vell-os telepathic levels) that gave you bonuses, and set a bit so that they only showed up once each. The text could talk about 'suddenly feeling stronger' or someting like that.
Everyone would be inertialess, obviously.
And I think you're just making it up :p.
It would probably be possible, but why do that when there are so many good RPGs out there already? (Avernum series, Geneforge, Planescape: Torment, etc.).
------------------ Why are you all looking at me like that? 9 out of 10 voices in my head agree that I'm not insane! 12000 posts as of 07.19.38, 1:23 PM (5:23 ASW time).
So I was making it up then? Good to know!
I agree that it wouldn't be anywhere near as good as existing RPGs. I just remembered it and my mind started ticking over, coming up with how you'd do things. I thought it was an interesting idea and wondered if anyone had thought of it before (other then this apparently made up plugin).
I kind of liked the idea of money as experience, and you spend experience to improve your strength and speed etc or learn spells. But then how would be able to buy swords and stuff?
coughweaponsandshieldscough
I'm sorry, I'm allergic to the obvious. For some reason, it just hurts.
I imagine money would be money. Otherwise this would need to be a communist RPG. You red scum :).
Well, it would certainly make it unique if there was no money!
But I just thought of something, if you used the auto-aborting mission idea, which made several outfits available. These outfits would be something like increasing strength, learn a spell, get better with your sword, etc. But each 'level' you could only pick one or two (using mission bits obviously).
Hmmmmm....
I really like that idea of leveling. You could have an outfit, 'XP point,' which was required for the various others to show up. Then, the others removed one 'XP point.' It would be pretty cool.

So you're saying that PCs (I assume you mean IBM/PCs) are like drugs while Macs are like cults :D?
Try telling a Linux user that they aren't a fanatic. See how long your IP adress stays up...
I like that 'XP Point' idea. You could even have certain places where you could get training. In other words you'd have to go to the 'School of Magic' to learn spells or something. You'd have to make sure the XP outfits were weighted really high (or low) so they'd all appear together when available.
You could also have situations where NPCs taught you spells/skills free of (XP) charge.
Oh, and suits of armour and clothing etc could brought from the shipyard...
About my sig - it's a quote a friend and I came up with many years ago back in highschool. It was long before either of us had heard of Linux. But I agree with you about how long you're IP would last. Fear the Penguin.

I attempted something like that in my Gundam 0083 Teaser plug. The walk animation was surprisingly easy to do, but yes, it was really large. Oh, I might be advertising for downloads, but this does not mean that my Gundam plug will be completed. Ever. However, you might want to check it out for ideas.

Hi. There already IS a game where experience is money, well kinda... and its made by Ambrosia. Called Cythera, and I've got it, and it ROCKS! There's a web boar for it, just look to the bottom. The idea of a plug that does that is interesting, but pointless. Going over that it looks as you two would really like it. Check it out.

Yes, I know about Cythera. It's been out for years.
I was more wondering if anyone else remembered this plugin from many years ago. Plus, it's an interesting idea thinking how you could use the Nova engine to create an RPG, and I was curious if anyone else had thought of it before.
While a Nova based RPG would never come close to something that was actually designed as an RPG from the begining, it's always good to think how to strech the Nova engine in different and crazy ways. There's a lot of stuff you can do with Nova that people just haven't thought of yet...
I believe the RPG was being made by Meowx, as I saw it on his page. In any case, it didn't work out- EV:O's engine isn't really made for that sort of thing, although it certainly was a creative idea. I'll try to dredge up more about it if I can.

Why not just use Coldstone for the RPG making, and keep EVN for making...uh... I really don't know what class of game Nova is, but use it for making that kind of game. (see mantaray's Carriben, {I can't spell} Someone had the idea to use it for a plane game, etc, etc, etc.)

I always figured that I never saw the end result because it was just to hard to do. It would have been very interesting to play though. Meowx sounds right (that doesn't meant anything though). I glad someone else remembered it. Thanks Entropy, I'm glad someone doesn't think I'm crazy!
I was never planning to turn my plugin into an RPG. After thinking about it for a little while though, I was just curious if anyone had attempted it and succeeded. I wanted to see how they did some things.
The Caribbean (I had to check) plug looks very cool, but isn't it just Nova with ships? Still something I want to play though...

I played around with idea of an immune system game (you play a Killer T-cell), via Coldstone, but it occurs to me it might work almost as well within Nova. At least the EV NPCs are capable of attacking each other!

The RPG idea sounds kinda weird. If you could pull off small sizes of the walking sprites, there wouldn't be much left to fiddle with the game engine.
Check out the EV Image Gallery, someone posted a preview of an upcoming Nova-esque game that can render backgrounds.
