Corvette help...

Well I have been making a Corvette for about 3 hours now, and have finally reached alpha 1 build (hull complete - no external details or weapons added yet). I would like to know what you lot think so far (textures, general design, etc). So I can get the design perfected before I add any more details. Here is the teaser pic:
(url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/ewanc/vette_build1.jpg")http://homepage.mac....ette_build1.jpg(/url)

The three recessed pannels in the top are where the some of the weapons systems and sensors will be located.

Please post your comments and cryticisms as this will be the next ship realeased by Rasor Design Studios to the public for free use in Plug-Ins,

It all comes down to scale, I suppose. I'd suggest maybe making it less thin. It's very squashed.

It's too flat! How big is this thing supposed to be? Is it a one person ship?

My thought is to make the whole main body Thicker. By the look of it, there looks to be barely any room for a pilot.

Otherwise, it is very cool looking. Make something like that in 3 hrs, heck, I'm having trouble getting myself to create solar systems for evnova. All that takes is for me to sit down, drag&drop; and type a few words 🙂

Well its and 8 man ship. Roughly twice the size of this fighter:

It does look slightly thin to me but I beefed it up and it looked terrible. I will try making it a bit thicker later tonight by remodelling the front section. There is thinking behind the thin design - harder to hit! Also the rear section and engines detach if overly damaged and the front segment can be used as an independant vessel.

Thnks everyone for your comments,

Well I think it looks good, even if everyone else doesn't. And the detachment thing is a cool, though not terribly origional, idea too.

I didn't say I didn't like it. He wanted suggestions, so I said what I thought it needed. But I do like it, I have a hard time designing spaceships.

That wasn't what I meant, and it's probably my fault for wording it wrong.

I think that being skinny looks better than it would if he made it fatter.

Perhaps the pilot could be laying down inside it. It definatly would give you a huge combat advantage (being hard to hit) in real life, but I'm not sure how big of a differnece it would make in Nova.

I like it the way it is.

Flat is relative. If it is, say, 40 meters long, not a real big ship, then 4 meters in height still gives plenty of headroom.

Remember the original Millenium Falcon. The interior wasn't more than 3 meters high. Makes it easier to reach all the switches.

The front part looks too much like an Auroran Argosy.

As for the other ship you just posted, what is it's weapons compliment? I am practicing making a ship using your design (I do not plan to release it).

Thanks. I know that it isnt a very original idea but so far it hasnt really been used in NOVA (as far as I can remember).

Thanks also. I tried making it thicker again but it really just ends up looking dumpy and stupid. These ships are fast and sleek. They dont have very powerful weapons and they have terrible armour (although this is made up for by excellant sheilding).

As do I 😛 As I said its about twice the length of the fighter (which I may have to reduce in size in the sprite), so relatively speaking its about right for the race. Agreed on the Falcon point!

Trust me, it wont look like that for long! Ive got a more than just a few little doo-dads of detail that I am going to add and the weapons systems are looking pretty darn good if I do say so myself! Sensor arrays will be complete soon enough and added asap. All shaping up nicely 🙂

Thanks everyone for your comments so far but keep them coming! Please! Will post this ship on the gallery as soon as i have it finnished,

UPDATE

Ok, time has been short this week, but I have started to add some detail I have modelled to the corvette (does corvette seem about right size wise to everybody). Anyway take a look (not much just some pipes and turbines added):

So whaddya think?

Wow - I liked it before and I really like it now. Great job. Have you thought about making more lines (like cables or more pipes)? I have always thought that added more realism to ships. Great job though.

Thanks, there is a lot more detail still to add. Im pretty much finished modelling and texturing the sensor array which will sit in the same recessed square as the middle small turbine. There is also a quad cannon turret, 4 cannons and a missile launcher still to be added so expect more updates soon! More pipes and general small details will also be added.

Glad you liked it,

What program(s) did you use to make those ships?

These were made in Meshwork (the hull) and Strata (the detail) and textured in Strata.

Uhoh, I just realized something. Would it be too much trouble to change the name of your ship? EVS has had for quite a while a ship called a 'corrvette' that splits into two peices, and I think confusion could result. I do not lay claim to the idea of ships that seperate, but could you please change your vessel's name or remove the seperation feture?
(edit) not to mention, it looks a whole lot like the Pigdor corvette fetured in the EVS screenshots. Not to suggjest anything.... but it is kinda a funny coincedince.

Well its not just going to be called "Corvette". Corvette is a class of ship. Kind of heavilly armed, bigger than a heavy fighter but smaller than a destroyer - kind of light freighter sized. They are highly manouverable with good speed. Anyway its not going to be up to me. This graphic is going to be part of my shipyard. What people call it in the game isnt up to me. However, I will remove the separation feature, and instead I shall make the heavy fighter out of the front design (heavilly modified though). Does that sound fair?

That's cool. I think the main front section is a little wide, but I love it as far as everything else is concerned.

I need to learn how to make Nova sprites - every tutorial I've looked at doesn't shed any light on how to create and impliment the banking and engine glows.
