I'm doing a plug with one Chär, and I wanted to know how to keep the "background" box from popping up, the way it is in the default scnario. It's quite annoying to get a popup box and not have any choices.

Just edit the "Merchant" chär resource.
Copy the resource from the data files to your plugin, and then edit away!

It seems strange to have to copy their resorce, even if you make yours almost identical, but I suppose it'll work.
Does your Char have "128" as its ResID?

I think it needs a '.' in front of the name. EVN's default is .trader.
------------------ Why are you all looking at me like that?
I tried all of this. Copied the char from the data files, and edited it as I saw fit. Oddly enough, when I have a period before the name, when I create a new pilot, there is simply 'background' and a blank pop-up, it seems to just erase the word 'trader'.Strangly, I can't see my choices (of one pilot) by clicking the background, which I could do when it didn't have a period in front of it. In other words, there is still the background area, but the default choice is blank and when I click it there isn't a popup menu.
Do you have the box checked for 'default pilot?'
err, I don't remember a "default character" but I do have principle character checked, but that just make it show up at the top of the list as I understand. I copied EVN's chär, and only edited the starting system and credits. edit: oh, and I got rid of all but the first intro screen. ------------------ "How many boards would the Mongols hoard if the Mongol hoards got bored." I tried various things here. It doesn't seem to be possible to remove the background box. But if you remove the leading period from the character designations, then you get these designations appearing as choices in the background box. It's very odd that the plug-in evidently doesn't fully over-write the char with matching ID. Perhaps it's something to do with the way Nova boots up?

The chär resource has been buggy since 1.0.0. In 1.0.0, it was impossible to overwrite the default "Trader" chär. In 1.0.1, to solve this problem, ATMOS put the dot in front of the name (this is how you make a file invisible in Mac OS X). This created the problem where the ".Trader" chär would disappear when any other chär is present. The whole thing is screwy and sucks. Maybe you should just let the dropdown menu appear or you should replace the main datafile in your plug.
