Just upgraded to Jaguar and now I can't save games in POG. No error messages are received. It looks like the game was saved just fine. However, when I go to load the game, it is nowhere to be found. I've searched the entire hard drive and cannot find any of the games I've saved since I upgraded to Jaguar.
Hrm... seems you're right - PoG seems to no longer create new save files in OS X 10.2. The only workaround I can see at the moment is that if you save your game with an existing name (that is, overwrite an old save file), the save will function properly. You just can't seem to make a new save file.
I'll point this out on the PoG dev list.

Here's a work around. Go into your saved games folder, make duplicates of your saved games (apple-D), rename the dups to whatever you're going to call your new player, then start a new game, saving the new game over the duplicated games (whose names you have already changed). Hope that makes sense.
I tested it out, and it works (also running 10.2 - meow, er, I mean growl).

Ack, I deleted the only saved game I had last night. It was from the demo version and I thought i wouldn't need it anymore. I just now realized that it doesn't want to save the games. Sounds like a good work around if I didn't delete the only save file I had. :frown:

Mr. Muggwin,
If you would like I can e-mail you a saved game file. Just e-mail me(address is above) and I can shoot you one.
Alternatively, I don't know if it would work(since I don't use OSX), but you might try creating a new file(just make a text file), rename it with the .pog extension, boot up PoG and see if you can save your game with the name of the file you just created. Hopefully this will work. If not just drop me an email and I'll fire you off a saved game that you can then duplicate/overwrite.
Good luck.

Yes, this works.
(now running 10.2)
Why don't you just fire up PoG in Classic?

I tried Classic but it didn't run correctly for me. I had to actually reboot into OS 9. This worked for playing and saving the file, just a bit of a pain though. I tryed the text file idea and it didn't work for me. But I just read of a different way I might try. Also I emailed Stark to send me a file to try to save over. It's worth a try.
The save didn't work because you probably used text edit and checked the hide file extension. do this: 1. Create a text file (any name) 2. Drop it into your PoG folder 3. Rename it the name you want to save to with .pog (this should pop up an error message saying something like, "This file has an extension of .rtf, use .rtf or use .pog." Select the use .pog option.
Hope that works.

Hi Everyone
Just while thinking of this thread, has anyone worked out whether it is a problem with PoG, Jaguar or both. While the suggestions made are a good temporary work around, I'd like to know if they are going to be permenantly fixed wither with a patch to PoG or to Jaguar (if it is in fact a more widespread problem). Anyone got ideas or info?
Cheers
M.

It is a problem with PoG/Coldstone that was created by Jaguar.
Apparantly Apple, when it designed Jaguar, decided to "do things differently" with its navigational services(which handle things like PoG's game saves). The changes have made it so that PoG can not create new saved game files, and hence have caused this problem. Since this new way of doing things is how Apple wants to do things you can't call it a bug, since it is intentional.
Therefore, we need to wait until Beenox "fixes" the problem with Coldstone, and then re-compiles PoG for things to work.
That make sense?

Yep makes sense. So we'll just have to wait for the update. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later as I can see the problem being a turn off for some you have yet to experience the fun of PoG ...
I can create a textfile with the pog extension, and it grabs the appropriate icon. Dropping the icon on the game opens the Game. Now I play awhile, hit comand 'S' for the save function. Quit POG. Now when I restart the Game, either by dropping the file on it, or by double clicking the Game itself, it starts a new one. I attempt to load a game and it doesn't see the game file as a loadable file.

Well, there are several things. 1. Did you save with the exact same name as your text file, including the .pog extension? 2. Are you sure the extension is .pog? (which it most likely is from what you told me) 3. Finally, when you are in the game, can you open the game by hitting "load" from the mainscreen?
Tell us what you find.
Saved with exactly same name including .pog extension (also received a known good game file from my brother) when I click Load from the main menu screen, it brings up the OS X Finder navigation, and I can select Folders to Open, but all the files are non-selectable. (Greyed out)
I also tried dropping the file directly on the application (both when it was open and closed) and that did not help.

Not knowing anything about X(I thankfully am still running under 8.6 which, as we all know, is the one blessed OS), can you still boot in classic mode? And if so, will PoG work there?
After reading all the postings on this subject, I was able to come up with a fix that works for me. I rebooted the computer using OS9 as the startup disk and saved a game there. After saving the game, I duplicated the save file a couple of times, then restarted in Jaguar. When I dragged the saved game file over the POG application icon, the saved game loaded fine (it did not work when I used the Load option from the starting menu of the game). After playing in OSX for a short time, I saved the game, using the exact name of one of the save game files I made in OS9. As a further test, I moved my character to a new screen in the game, then loaded the game I had just saved in OSX. It worked. Thanks to everyone who posted their suggestions. I couldn't have done this without them. And I hope this helps other new POG players like myself.

Mr. AC,
Thanks for posting your solution! Hopefully it will help someone who is still having problems.
Also, it might be a good idea for you to (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate.cgi?action=agree")register(/url) yourself on these boards.
