Getting rid of every system ever

I remember that back in the day my beloved copy of EV Edit had a menu command that got rid of all of the existing systems and stellar objects, letting you start from scratch.

How would you suggest I achieve a similar effect with Nova's EVTools short of copying over every system into my plug and changing each and every one of them, one by one? It would be kinda cool if I could have a clean slate to work with.

You can't. And niether could EV-Edit. In order to actually remove systems, you have to edit the apropriate data files.

Bah, I was sure EV-Edit could do that. Oh well. I guess I'll be having an interesting* weekend.

Huh?
Why not just make a plug-in file with no systems and then create whatever systems and stellars you want? To avoid conflicts with Nova's systems, you would also have to edit a copy of the Nova data file that contains the systems/spobs, removing all the built-in resources.

(Early versions of EV-Edit did not need a menu command to remove all existing reaources, it often did that spontaneously, forcing you to start from scratch whether you wanted to or not.)

Course, it would also take what you entered for your resources, and instead input random garbage into your plug.

Hmmm, all this "reminiscing" makes me sort of glad that I've only started developing plugs now... 🙂

You're lucky that you're starting now. You have all sorts of third-party apps that help you make plugs. "In the old days," we only had ResEdit, EVEdit (which was-and still is- evil), and Schmelta V (which was cool).

Shmelta-V! Good times, good times.
After looking at all this bickering about EVEdit's ungodly wrath, I am so glad I didn't use it.

Yea, EVEdit was evil, plain and simple. It did really strange things at random times, and it also corrupted endless scores of potential plugins. It was more work to undo what EVEdit did to you than it was to just work all in ResEdit and Schmelta V.

I am pretty sure, that if you can just ignore the exsisting systems. If you don't connect any of your new systems to the remaining network, then it doesn't matter if it exsists or not. Just make sure you don't have a strart point in the reminants of the old universe

Hmm... I guess I never got into EVEdit enough to really appreciate it's flaws.

I did wonder why missions never worked, though. That was odd.

And if you have less systems than the original does, then you can guarantee that they never show up by making blank systems with visbit(s) that will never be used.

EV-Edit ruined more of my work than I'd like to think about. I got rid of it pretty quickly after that. Never got into Shmelta-V much, just used good ol' ResEdit for everything. And now we have Nova Tools (so I can still use ResEdit for everything and still acomplish stuff quickly and painlessly)!

To get rid of all systems, just look up the number of s˙st resources in the data files, and put blank resources into your plug until you have replaced everything. This takes a minute and make sure nothing interferes with your work. Just create some blank s˙sts, copy, paste (unique ID), copy all again, paste again works great. 🙂

I dont have the know-how to use Res-edit. I've always used EV-Edit, made loads of backup files and when it corrupted one I used another, and another, and another until I get it right.

I think you're right. As I recall, EV-Edit had a handy little "Armageddon" button that wiped away every system and let you make all new ones, starting with ResId 128.
