I know nothing about using 3D stuff. I want to learn how to make 3D ship models. So I can put them into EVN. I have PVORAY. Could somebody give me a guid?

Well, U.S. Orion. I happen to have a simple little model that this guy asked me to make for him. It's called the "Bombard Missile. ;)" I can let you look at it, and experiment with it, but please don't distribute it without my permission, and don't try to call it your own.
If you mean a manual for POVRay, there's a really good .html manual available from the (url="http://"http://www.povray.org")www.povray.org(/url) website. You download it, and view it with your browser. It is extremely good documentation for POVRay 3.1g.r2.

It may be discouraging to start with POV-Ray, which is less classic modeling and designing, and more scripting and description. You are essentially describing an image thru code, with no real time object/scene visualization. It is doable, but hard, and it might not be the most encouraging start in 3D modeling. Joe

Well what would be a good one to start with?

Heh. I wish someone told me that from the start... Now I'm hopelessly addicted to POVRay (which might not be a bad thing...), and I'm now trying to learn Infini-D, SoftImage, Lightwave, and Maya all at once. Daunting task, huh? I'm just waiting for the beginning Lightwave class and Maya class to be offered...
Oh, Jamo, my suggestion would be to start on Infini-D, Strata, or Amapi. Infini-D's the oldest of the three, and probably easier to start learning on.

You can't get a hold of Infini-D anymore, can you?
The most popular 3D modelers are: (url="http://"http://www.lightwave3d.com")Lightwave(/url) - is about $395, if you're a student (url="http://"http://www.aliaswavefront.com")Maya(/url) - is $1995, but there's a free version that makes lovely green watermarks on your work for you (url="http://"http://www.electricimage.com")ElectricImage(/url) - dunno how much the full version costs, but (url="http://"http://www.dvgarage.com")dvGarage(/url) offers a $199 version (url="http://"http://www.corel.com")http://www.corel.com(/url) (Bryce) - Bryce 5 is for landscapes. It's around $300. ATMOS used Bryce 4 to make the landscapes in Nova
Erm, I don't know any of the urls for strata or POVray.
Anyway, I heard that someone here was making a guide for building ships in Infini-D, but I didn't really pay attention. Could someone clarify this?
------------------ Parenthesis: Useful for having notes within notes. (Always remember to keep these short and to the point, not long winded lectures, otherwise the reader will not know what you are saying. (Also note that parenthesis within parenthesis are sometimes confusing (when they end at the same time)) You must always close parenthesis (with a ) symbol) because otherwise it will confuse the reader even more.

If you want to use Mechanisto I have a tutorial at (url="http://"http://squibix.net/mech-ev")http://squibix.net/mech-ev(/url)
Actually, POV ray can be an excelent renderer if you have a modeler that can export to it. There are numerous free modelers that can do this, but i am not sure if there are any for the mac. However if you have a Windows or Linux/Unix box you can find many (some very good). Indeed, you may be able to recompile with little effort one of the open source modelers for OS X (if you have it). Good Luck

I believe it's now called Carrara.

www.journeyed.com is an Academic Discount software retailer, and they have Lightwave for $395, and Maya for $500.

The non-unlimited version of Maya is completly outclassed bt lightwave. Unlimited has so many more features, if you got the scratch, it is worth it; however, if you can only afford Maya Complete, then just get lightwave instead. Joe
What about free programs? I dont have $300 to spare.
Do you have a Linux/Windows box, if not for mac there is the cripled version of Strata, the free version (3.7) of pixels 3D, and mechanisto. Those sare the only free 3D software I know of for the Mac, But if you have a linux box, there is a ton of really great programs. Joe
Where can I get them?
(url="http://"http://www.strata.com")www.strata.com(/url), (url="http://"http://www.pixels3d.com/")http://www.pixels3d.com/(/url) (I dont think you can download the full vers of pivels 3d 3.7 from here, i got it on a cd from one of my 3D magazienes, not sure where you can get it; unfortunately, this program is the best of the bunch), for mechanisto, try 3dsite.com (not sure where to get this one either, i have never used it). Joe
And despite the complexities of POVRay, it too is free, and well loved by me.
