I tried to make a new ship with a shield sprite. In the beginning, I never saw the shield effect... then I decided to make a chär that has this ship in the beginning, to test it and, surprise!, the shield effect was active! Cute to see that when people shoot at me, my shield visibly protect me. I staged a fight between this chär and an AI with a similar ship, and only my chär has the shield effect.
So the question: is this behaviour normal? (did I not read the Bible enough and is it written in there?), or did I do something wrong and there is a way to have AI use the shield effect?
Tx for any help!

That's really weird. I haven't played around much with the shields much, (okay, never) but I don't think it's only for chärs.
I don't know if shields are coverred in the Bible. What I do know is that someone has made a plugin that has shield effects for all the ships in Nova.

The site is still there, but UBB is messing up the link. Try http://homepage.mac.com/arcangel_c/.
Would you mind my using some of those in a plug? I accually havent looked at them yet, they are still downloading. But still, I'd like to use them.

You'd have to ask ArcAngelCounterstrike - they're his, not mine.
Geez, I'm out of it. I don't even know what a chär is. Bleh.

A chär is a charecter resource. It is used to give the player certain attributes(ships, missions, credits, etc.). If more than one exist, you will get a list to choose from when you make a new charecter.
Yes, and there's a tutorial on it (url="http://"http://www.oxy-web.com/evnep/tutorials/char/char.html")here(/url). shamelessly self-promotes

To "conclude" this topic about shield effect:
So on my (very) slow computer, where Nova should not be running because (1) it has not by far the minimum specs required and (2) I don't have a valid licence, the shield effect is shown on the player's ship, and no AI ships. On the computer of my office mate (high end G4 and valid license ), the shield effect is drawn for every ship, including AIs.
So intermediate conclusion: the game draw more or less things according to the ressources available, and on "normal" computers, the shield effect should be no problems.
I may only conclude by praising the developers, that did make a very flexible engine that adapt itself to the speed of the computer!
For your information, my computer is a Performa 5200 (603e 75MHz), with system 8.1, 24 Mb RAM, 1 Mb V-RAM. I didn't buy a licence of Nova myself, as the game is not very cool to play on my Mac (in opposition to the Mac of my office mate). To run Nova, mostly to be able to develop plug-ins at home and quickly test them, I replaced every picture ressource by 256 color pictures, reduced the memory requirement of Nova, and used my old faithfull RAM-doubler to achieve an amazing 72 Mb of RAM, where some 64 are free to use by Nova. Nova requires officially 128 Mb of RAM and a G3 processor. The fact that Nova is playable on my Mac is in itself is a great achievment in software flexibility. Praise Mr. Burch! Of course, Nova needs some 4-5 minutes to start, and several seconds to react when you land or make an Hyperspace jump, but it is still possible to debug plug-ins!

So congratulations, cavin! Could you put up a screenshot so we can see what these shields look like?

Just a short time as it fades away. Usualy how AI fights, it just fades away with shield power since its constantly hit.
Released!
I do not post a picture of my shields, as my Plug-in is finally released! Have a look on the Plug-in "CSE New Switzerland" and discover its amazing features.
What is the most stunning thing in this plug-in? Some think the Stock Options are a must, while others prefer the Red Cross, and its Lottery. Scientists vote for the Pulsating Neutron Star, and engineers for the CSE Research Facility and its Techplorer. But the players certainly prefer the first-ever released missions where YOU really decide what you want to do. In the minor Swiss United Banks string, you will be trusted with valuables, and it will be up to you to either deliver them as promised, or to betray the trust of your employer and make easy money; but beware of the jail and of the bounty hunters! With about 200 enhancing resources, this self-sufficient plug-in is a teaser for the major New Switzerland Plug-in soon to be released! (soon = indefinite duration, ranging from minutes to years)
