first of all, i must state this isnt entirely my idea, although i thought of it a long while ago. would taking pictures of lego or knex sjips with a dig. camera work?

Well, that would seem to yield pretty low quality ships to me. Getting the angles lined up right would also be challenging. I wouldn't recommend it.

yeah it'd be hard to do, but think of the benefits. imagine a lego plugin. it would be so cool to see all kinds of lego ships (esp. properly scaled, though that'd add another dimension of difficulty) blowing each other up

Wouldn't be hard at all. Just use a tripod and some lines on a big sheet of paper to line up camera and ship. Take one shot of each then do the rest in photo shop.
I'll help.

That would be an cool plug, and if u took pictures of lego faces and have them in the comunication box. That would give the right feeeling. If u rreplace the voinians use the pirates ship as a space ship. I can go on like this forever... If anyone would start to do an plug with lego let me help!

I think it would probable be easier to just make lego bricks in a 3D program an build virtual lego models.
Anyway I think a lego plug-in would be a great idea. It would be really cool, and you could have persons like Jack Steel and different governments that have been the space influenced legos over the years. It would be a really interesting and fun project to work on.

If I remember correctly there are lego model programs that you can actually make 3d designs of legos.. of course they were built for little kids to make 'blue prints' with, but I imagine you could get at least screenshots out if you really wanted to.
I don't know if there are any new programs out there like this, but on one of the first mac addict cd's there was a program named "Lego Builder" I believe.

I don't think building Lego ships on the computer will give it the right feel. We need to use real legos.
I'm all for a lego plugin. How would you do the landing pics though?
------------------ (/mindless babble)
U can take pics of lego houses and stuff like that. They are selling space theme lego
hehe. that would be so cool, esp Desert-Rats idea of using the faces for the comm dialog: but get the space set, and use the bearded pirate ones for... erm... pirates!

Hey, I would love to be part of it.
Ive a model of a light freighter set to go!
As for the explosions, they will have to be transformed int bricks scattering in space (like the jettisoned cargo)
Is that possible?

There's a lego modeling tool that exports to POV-Ray format; I could find such a model and reverse-engineer it to recreate real-life models.
Then again, I could just not be involved and you guys could each go to all the neccesary trouble of tripods and clamps and bluescreens and digital cameras and........er.......You get the picture.

well, thats so hi-tech. but, glad to see its caught on, tho who gets to make it?

I don't believe it would loose any feel at all. In my experiences with 3d graphic design, cubes are among the easiest of all shapes to make. And monotone plastic is among the easiest of textures. You could probably, without too much effort, make some almost photo quality lego blocks in, for example, Infini-D. Where it would get tricky would be lining up the blocks evenly to one another, and even this could be accomplished without too much hassle.

So many possibilities...
