Well I decided to try out EV-Edit to make work on my EVO expansion plug-in easier. It's still in the early stages, so I have about 15 missions done and one new system. I decided to try it out. So I duplicate one of my pilots and land on the stellar where the first mission is supposed to be available and head to the bar.
Nothing happens.
I tried everything to get it to show up. I double checked to be sure I'd set the right mission bit and the right stellar, since it's in a system that changes in the course of the original game. I keep trying, still nothing. Finally, I check it out in good old ResEdit. It turns out that when EV-Edit had created the mission, it set AvailRecord to -1! In other words, I'd have to be an Offender or worse to get the mission, but I was a Role Model. EV-Edit incorrectly assumed -1 meant "ignored" when actually 0 does for your AvailRecord. Moral of the story: make your missions (and, I suspect, other stuff) with ResEdit!

Amen.
If you had continued to use EV-Edit, you would have eventually run into a much worse bug: it has been known to write codes in plugs that make EVO crash when you start it up with that plug. Once this happenes, your pretty much screwed. I had to do 80% of Paralell Universe over because of that damn bug. But I use Res-Edit for everything except systems. The only reason I ues EVO Develpoers Map for systems is it gives you a much better idea of where the systems actually are on the map.

Good God, I suppose I'm lucky it screwed up early and I didn't keep using it until I had an experience like yours.
You mean to tell me that EV-Edit didn't f--- up your plug when you opened your plug up in it? I mean EV-Edit was garunteed (by me) to trash your plug 100% of the time just by opening your plug in EV-Edit. I mean that damn program corrupted some plug resources of mine just by opening the plug in that program (good thing I knew how freak'in buggy that program . . . AHEMMM . . . "Piece of Sh--" is, and made a copy of my plug which I opened in EV-Edit). I mean, ResEdit could only retrieve some of the inconsequential data from that plug AFTER it tried to restore the plug, and I hadn't even saved one damn bit of plug data in EV-Edit, only opened the plug, viewed a few ships (made NO changes), then closed it with out saving. I find it a miracle that EV-Edit didn't screw your plug over big time like its done with me 100% of the time. Now go get the EV Developers Map, EVOGod (use ResEdit for stuff that doesn't work here, but this program has safeties built in so corruption by computer error doesn't happen, the program shuts itself down before damage is done), ShipWrite, and of course, ResEdit.

And the author has the nerve to ask money for it! He should be paying me for all the heinous atrocities done by EV-Edit!

I don't do EVO; only EV. But I tested EV-Edit just now by creating a quick-and-dirty EV mission. Worked just fine. AvailRecord read '0,' for 'ignored,' just as it should.
But then, that's what I expected. The current edition of EV-Edit has never given me any problems at all.

Sorry, I had to express my feelings about EV-Edit, the only program garanteed to screw up your plug. Sorry if I sound a bit harsh, but the program just isn't the best out there. Res-Edit is a great program but you have to know what your doing, otherwise nothing works. That's why I try to use programs that simplify everything so that I dont have to type in all these funky numbers that I understand completely, just get tired of them.

I would rather have had EV-Edit trash the plug right off so I only had to redo 10% of P.U. instead of redoing 80% of it.
OHBOYOHBOYOHBOY C'mon, give Ben Chess some credit. At least he TRIED making our lives a little easier, plus it isn't THAT bad. I use it occasionally and it rarely does anything, so lighten up. If you know that it's so buggy, just don't use it. Some new editors are coming out anyways (I think)

Here, here! Yes, EV-Edit has a bad track record when it comes to corrupting plugins, but at least he tried to make a visual editor. Back in the day, EV-Edit was just about it if you didn't understand ResEdit.
EV-Edit is definitely outdated and outclassed now, but that's no reason to trash it (and by extension the author) so vehemently(?sp?). Let it fade away in peace and use the newer, better tools. As everyone has said, the few R&R; software ResEdit extensions for EVO are nice, EVO Map Editor is well done, and I've heard good things about EVGOD. Oh, and I've heard Shipwright is good, too.

That's hard when you lost 4 months or work because of it. Besides, I never really liked it that much anyway, I just didn't know how to use Res-Edit at the time.
My advice: Get Resorcerer...much better.

For $250, I'd hope it was a hell of a lot better.
You say you've heard GOOD things about EVOGod and ShipWrite? Man you're DEAD wrong, these programs are WONDERFUL!!!!!!!! Also, The Docks is GREAT (just a step below ShipWrite, but I use them both anyway b/c I don't have the heart to get rid of The Docks even though ShipWrite sort of out classes it, b/c The Docks is such a GREAT program). shado83, you've done EVO plug developers a BIG favor by coming out with 2 awsome programs (even though one IS still in Beta). Also, to the creators of ShipWrite and the ResEdit resource editors (same people did both), you guys have done an equally great service to us developers and for that I raise a toast in ya'lls names ( . . . now where'd I put that bottle of bubbly . . . :D, not really 'cause I can't legally drink yet :D).
Oh, and I will in the future (after I learn the Python programming language) attempt to do what Ben Chess attempted to do . . . a complete and visual EV/O/N editor/ plug creator program . . . since I am to have my first taste of Python this evening, I expect that I'll start no earlier than sometime next year (not next school year, but sometime of Spring/Summer 2002), and not be finished with it for much later than that (since I graduate High School in exactly one year this June, and start college that Fall, and since I'll be doing ROTC I don't expect to have much time to devote to coding a complete editor and still have time to go to all my classes and do all my work and still get a good night's rest, which would be about 5 to 6 hours :D). But one can still dream can't he? (retorical question)
Python Python Python Now I remember, it's Monty Python!!!!!
Sorry about that.

------------------ The last time I was on this board, the price of dumb questions was really high. Ask me what I'm doing.
Let's say you, JediBrass, DO release a complete editor for EV/N/O And in 2 years it will also be outdated, and people start mocking you and your software... How would you feel? Hey, Ben didn't make the best, but the was the FIRST, and he tried hard, because most of it actually DOES work. So c'mon! Let the program be! (hehe plus I'll appreciate you're program, too!) This isn't meant offensive, but rather defensive
I still haven't changed my mind.
Ok, let me ask this here because I don't want to start another thread.
I know dirt about ResEdit, and am a bit interested in these 'editors' you speak of. If I were to... become more interested... which editor would you recommend and where would I get it? If I were interested that is

EVO Developers Map for systems/planets. Otherwise, I don't know.
BTW, don't you mean you've heard dirt about EV-Edit? Because I've never heard any about Res-Edit.
