So, when do we start? We should probably make a final decision on the content first, then decide on the site design and hosting.
As we start, I think we should just have:
Discussion Software Links A couple tutorials A news page
Afterwards, we could consider adding file archives and a developer database.
What's everyone else's opinion?
------------------ "C++" should have been called "D" - If you understood that, you must be a programmer Micah L - (url="http://"mailto:mlanier@mac.com")mailto:mlanier@mac.com(/url)mlanier@mac.com
My opinion is that we should either start a mailing list of get our own boards. I can host if you wish.
Secondly - we need the server-side scripts. I know many, but intergration is always a problem. We could attempt to hack phorum (http://www.phorum.org/) to get news pages - it is possible, it's even been done by the people who write phorum, or we could attempt to write our own scripts, which would take longer but would be more sucessful, plus if it's written right it can be distributed.
Anyway, if you choose to write your own ask me because I'm already doing that =P. belive me, it's the only really viable option, if you try to intergrate several scripts it all falls down around your ears.

We should meet on IRC or something, it's easier to chat there.

First, sorry about my lack of communication over the past week - I've been very busy with school. Second, for some inexplicable reason, I am unable to connect to any IRC server, I've tried every programme I can, but it doesn't work. I'd be willing to use ICQ, but I think AIM is much easier for a group chat. I'll see if any of you are on tonight, and IM you.
The Ikonboard is excellent, In think we should use that for our forums. It's got the best bits of UBB, and quite a lot of things more. We will need to finalise a colour scheme, here are the HTML colour codes for the site design I'm working on:
Background: Black #000000 Text: White #FFFFFF Links: Blue #0066CC Headings and Titles: Blue #0066CC
I wouldn't know how to implement this in the forums, but to get an idea about how many forums we'll need, here's all the ones I've planed: Two developer boards; one for plug-ins, one for other stuff, a query board, were people can ask us (and fellow developers) their questions and a Banter and Brawl style board called The Freeport Bar. As well as that i would like a forum were people can post comments about the currently active articles.
As well as articles, I think we should have weekly polls. These could occupy the space were the banners are on the mock site I posted earlier. I was talking to John about them, and we decided they should be posted on a monday, closed the next saturday and the results posted on Sunday. There would also be an option of viewing the results of previous polls, plsu the option of suubmitting a poll. We would need to find a good poll script that can be customized to fit in with the colour scheme, but that shouldn't be too hard.
I'm gonna upload the pages soon, but I'm having this strange problem. I've got two frames set up, with the frameset called index.html. The two frames are targetted to main.html and main_contents.html. However, when I preview them in my browser, I get two error messages saying 'No such device or address'. I check the source code, and the tagets have changed to /main.html and /main_contents.html and if I change them back, the browser says it can't find the files the frames point to. I haven't got a clue why it isn't working, becuase it shos both frames in the index file perfectly in Dreamweaver. Anyone got an idea?

I thought your AIM was broken?
(url="http://"http://www.mycgiserver.com/~mlanier/evd/index.php")http://www.mycgiserv...r/evd/index.php(/url) There's another possible site design. The point of this one is the layout, not the appearance. Okay, kinda the appearance, but I was mainly looking to help us decide on a layout for the site.
Here's my early prototype for the site. It's not even in alpha yet, I only posted it to show you what i was working on.

heh. heh. heh. Well, I guess I'd better make one myself.
Anyway, good going so far, but I dislike frames.
I'd like a corss between the two so far, Micah, your design leaves a scroll bar, which I dislike, Nec I think you should get rid of the patternon the side but I think your header graphic is the best so far.
I think that the frame background pattern looks good. Without, it makes the site look too plain and boring.

Not bad, one problem is that it is a bit cluttered, and it has that corporate look, wich is not to bad but it looks like a TV guide to me.
BTW If you want the URL for the evo comp results hear it is: (url="http://"http://www.mso.anu.edu.au/~ralph/rodger/evocomp.html")http://www.mso.anu.e...er/evocomp.html(/url).

Corporate? Yeh right. I guess I'll upload mine some time. Anyway, ditch the frame, it makes the page look bad at 800x600.

I agree. Dump the frame. Otherwise, the site looks great!
------------------ May the world never rest in peace.
Frames mean less loading! And I think it looks fine at 800 x 600...what do you mean by 'Yeah Right'
Ahem, what did I say when I first saw it, I said the frame at the side looked bad, and I was right.
Well, I lost this thread (forgot which board it was on) but I finally forwarded my freeware site addy to the Necromicon (sp?), so I hope that qualifies me as a member...
I have no web programming skills to speak of, but I could manage an editorial or a news page or something like that. (an editor, so to speak. Like the NewsWire here.)
In my last capacity, I was a proofreader and spellchecker for the Discovery TC. (I know, Gav and almost everyone else dropped out, but me anda guy named Captain Apple are working to resurrect it)
I now cheerfully offer these skills in support of your new board...

It isn't just a new board, it's a whole new domain with about everythin you could possibly need. Any help would be appreciated, although at the moment we don't need that much. When the site goes live however, we will need a whole host of admins and moderators.
Yo.
Can I be part of this? I don't have any net skills, but I am a good plug-in developer, and I can moderate the boards fine if you want. I can offer a few suggestions as well. Hey, Wham!Man. Can you give me your e-mail address? If you don't want to here, then mail me at JanGael@totalise.co.uk
